Birdhouse Workshop

Birdhouse Workshop

Community Education Assistant, Zabet NeuCollins, and volunteer, Aaron Dvorkin, recently taught the 2nd graders at Trenton Elementary School how to build a birdhouse for small birds such as titmice, chickadees, and more. The students used real tools, such as hammers and clamps, to create their birdhouses. This lesson complemented Ms. Schlaug’s spring curriculum, as the students were learning about birds and were counting birds for a community science project. Aaron is a finish-carpenter in Steuben.

Leaders’ Meeting The next Leaders’ Association meeting will be by Zoom on June 8, at 4:30 pm. Email carla.scocchi@maine.edu for the private link.

New 4-H Meeting Guidelines – We are starting to see the light at the end of the pandemic tunnel! Your 4-H Club Leaders will now be operating under some new guidelines for in-person meetings. Please view the4-H Meeting Checklist for a complete list of all guidelines, but here are some important updates:

– Meetings can be held indoors or outdoors
– Masks are required for all indoor meetings – regardless of vaccination status – for both youth and adults
– Masks are not required for outdoor meetings
– Social distance of THREE feet (not six) must be maintained between participants for all indoor meetings. This distance must be six feet between participants when anyone is eating or drinking.

Photo Contest Scavenger Hunt Are you an avid photographer? New to the hobby? No matter what skill level, we encourage you to get out and practice your photography skills. Feeling stumped? Not sure what to photograph? No worries — we’ve created a scavenger hunt just for you. To see the scavenger hunt categories, visit: extension.umaine.edu/hancock/4h/2021-photo-scavenger-hunt/

Here’s the exciting part: all scavenger hunt participants will receive a ribbon AND a little “door-prize.” If you take a photo of one item in each category, you’ll be submitted into a raffle to win a larger prize. And if you choose to, you can submit any (or all!) of these photos to the 2021 Photo Contest. Entries submitted to the 2021 photo contest will be judged and the highest scorers will get a cash prize.

The 2021 Photo Contest deadline is July 31st, 2021. For more information and to see past entries, visit extension.umaine.edu/hancock/4h/photo-contest/. The scavenger hunt will end at the same time.

4-H at the Fair – We are excited to announce that 4-H events at the Blue Hill Fair will resume this summer! There are a few slight modifications, but for the most part, 4-H shows and events will carry on as usual. One of the most important modifications is that all projects being entered into the 4-H Exhibit Hall will be brought to the Hancock County Extension Office in Ellsworth instead of directly to the fairgrounds. 4-H Staff will set up all of the projects in the exhibit hall to be on display for the entirety of the Blue Hill Fair. The same will be true after the fair – you can pick up your project at the Extension Office at your convenience after the fair. This is to reduce the number of people coming on and off the fairgrounds and give youth and families more flexibility for dropping off and picking up their projects. Speaking of projects – don’t forget to enter one into this year’s 4-H Exhibit Hall! We will be updating our Blue Hill Fair 4-H webpage and the Blue Hill Fair Book over the coming weeks – so stay tuned for updates as they are announced. We look forward to seeing you at the fair again!

Maine Association of Livestock Exhibitors (MALE) –  Don’t forget, now is the  time to get your application in to the Maine  Association of Livestock Exhibitors. Member ship in this organization covers families with  liability insurance. This insurance is a requirement at all fairs in the state of Maine. You can  now renew or join on line at:  www.mainelivestockexhibitors.org/. Doing it on-line means getting your  membership cards quicker, but don’t delay. You  must show proof of this membership before you will be able to show.

June Jamboree – Thanks to everyone who signed up for the 2021 June Jamboree celebrations. We have compiled more than 12 activities for youth to do at their homes and four in-person workshops spread out across the county. Activities range from backyard camping, to geocaching, to birding, to more! We are looking forward to sharing these outdoor experiences with 4-H youth, friends and family members. A big thank you to the 4-H Leaders Association who made this event possible, and for community partners who helped create activities or who are offering a workshop: Ellsworth Public Library, ArtWaves, Blue Hill Heritage Trust, Frenchman Bay Conservancy, Lone

Spruce Farm, and Tim Parson, Orienteer.

Sherry's pillowcases

We want to especially thank 4-H Independent, Sherry, who sewed twelve pillowcases for the organization “Ryan’s Cases for Smiles.” Ryan’s Cases for Smiles is a national non-profit organization that collects home-made whimsical pillowcases for pediatric patients.

Thank you Sherry! Your pillowcases have helped twelve children and their families cope with the trauma of illness and of hospital visits. Also, Sherry was the winner of the $25 gift certificate to Mardens.

Leaders Meeting Minutes

HANCOCK COUNTY 4-H LEADERS’ ASSOCIATION

May 11th, 2021

–Zoom meeting due to COVID-19–

Present- Lisa Carney, Lee Sargent, Heather Linnehan, Terry Swazey and office staff Carla Scocchi and Zabet NeuCollins (6).

Terry read the treasurer’s report.

Old Business:

  • Updated COVID19 guidelines – Last week UMaine released some new guidelines. Outdoor programs can now run at 100% capacity, as long as there is 6 feet of space per person. This includes the Blue Hill Fair. Meetings can now include more people. Also masks are now recommended, not required, when outdoors and socially distanced. We can meet indoors at 75% capacity with the 6’ limit, masks are required. No meetings at the extension office until the fall. The University system wants to be back to normal by September.
  • Jamboree update (Zabet) – registration is now open, everything is running as expected. The workshops are confirmed. Participants are limited to 10 per workshop, with exceptions so family can attend together.

New Business:

  • Steer Ticket Raffle – We should be able to sell tickets this summer and at the fair. A motion was made to sell steer tickets this year. Seconded and passed. Jason’s Butcher Shop in Albion may be a good alternative butcher if needed. We have been getting 6000 tickets per year; should we get the same? More or less? Online Paypal account?
  • Exhibit Hall – collect projects at the extension office and bring them over to the fair. Probably not going to have as many as in previous years. Need to think of a theme for the year, need for the fair book by June 1st. There will also be a virtual exhibit hall this year, we can have a screen in the hall to show them.
  • No activity tent this year.

Meeting adjourned at 5:30.

Respectfully submitted by Lisa Carney, Secretary
