Island Community Garden, Deer Isle (NEW)

Volunteers will work to transform an existing garden space on Church Street in Deer Isle Village (behind old elementary school) into a “teaching garden” where community members can help plant, water, feed, maintain and pick vegetables and flowers.

The site includes a 20’ x 30’ fenced in garden area, a 5’ x 20’ perennial flower bed, an 8’ x 10’ garden shed, a strawberry patch and peach trees.  Once the garden is underway, we would like to invite the public to gardening events with instruction on topics such as making compost, and coordinating books and reading with gardening activities.  Eventually we would like to invite elementary school students in gardening projects through an after-school program.  MGVs may help with garden renovation and care, organizing special events, publicity, making presentations on topics of interest, and building community by forming positive relationships.
