Interns will meet once per week for eight weeks at CCAR in Franklin, ME. The interns will be immersed in a positive youth development setting where they will \u201clearn by doing\u201d from aquaculture experts at CCAR and beyond. They will be expected to perform daily tasks to care for and raise Yellowtail Kingfish (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Seriola lalandi<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) while also working as a team to manage a project which they will present at the 4-H Exhibit Hall at the Blue Hill Fair. They will learn about the role of sustainable aquaculture in the global food system, gain marketable skills relevant to the aquaculture industry, and practice project management skills with the help of adult mentors. At least one of the sessions will be a field trip (site to be determined) to another aquaculture facility in Maine. Space is limited to 10 youth for this program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>This program is made possible through funding from <a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/aquaculture\/seanet\/\">Maine EPSCoR\/SEANET<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"5627\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5627 \" src=\"https:\/\/extension.umaine.edu\/hancock\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2018\/11\/Positive-Youth-4-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"4-H youth dissecting squid\" width=\"327\" height=\"184\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">4-H\/CCAR Intern dissecting squid, Summer 2018<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Youth Expectations<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Perform daily tasks necessary to care for living animals (water quality testing, systems check, etc)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Enroll as Hancock County 4-H members (requires parent\/guardian permission)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Come with an open mind and hands-on approach to learning in an experiential setting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ready to work as a team player to complete a group project<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Be respectful and participate fully in the program<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Abide by all safety regulations as well as CCAR and 4-H policies<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Be available for at least one day during the Blue Hill Fair (Thursday Aug 29 &#8211; Monday Sept 2, 2019)<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Bring your own lunch<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Dates<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tuesdays, 10:00 am &#8211; 3:00 pm, from July 9 &#8211; August 27<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Blue Hill Fair Exhibit Presentation: Labor Day Weekend, exact presentation date\/s TBD by the Intern group<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Compensation<\/h3>\n<p>Aquaculture Interns will receive a $500 stipend for the eight-week program.
