Knight\, Associate Extension Professor and State Livestock Specialist for the University of Maine Cooperative Extension\, and Dr. Jeff Lehmkuhler\, Extension Beef Specialist for the University of Kentucky to learn the latest updates on bale grazing strategies\, research highlights on the efficacy of different types of dewormers and deworming strategies in Beef Cattle\, and participate in Beef Quality Assurance training. Beef Quality Assurance Certificates will be signed and given out on the same day after completion of the class. \nAbout the Presenters:\nDr. Jeffrey W. Lehmkuhler was raised in southern Indiana. He attended Purdue University and obtained his M.S. in silvopastoral systems and Ph.D. in beef cattle nutrition from the University of Missouri. Jeff continued his career at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2001 and was hired by the University of Kentucky in 2008 where he now holds the title of Extension Professor. His internationally recognized programming has spanned five countries and covered a diverse range of ruminant production from dairy steers to yaks. Jeff’s external funding exceeds $6M dollars and he authored more than 125 newsletter and popular press articles\, 66 abstracts and journal articles\, and 46 proceedings and extension publications. A key to his success has been forging relations with colleagues to work as a team. Jeff received the Agri-Communicator award in 2004\, Southern Region ASAS Extension award in 2016 and M.D. Whiteker Excellence in Extension award in 2021. Jeff and his wife\, Gwen\, have three children. \nDr. Colt Knight grew up in a coal mining family in West Virginia where they also operated a small family farm and show horse stable. During academic breaks and between schools\, he worked in strip mines across the country. Colt earned his B.S. in Animal Science at the University of Kentucky\, M.S. in Animal Science at Angelo State University\, and his Ph.D. in Animal Science at the University of Arizona in 2006\, 2012\, and 2016\, respectively. In the fall of 2016\, he worked on a postdoc with Dr. Derek Bailey at New Mexico State University. Dr. Knight came to the University of Maine in 2017 where he currently works as Associate Professor of Extension and serves as the State Livestock Specialist. He teaches Introduction to Animal Science (AVS 145) and runs the Maine Grazing Behavior Lab. The core focus of the Grazing Behavior lab revolves around designing and manufacturing livestock tracking collars\, engaging in applied grazing behavior research\, and assisting other researchers with technology to interpret animal behavior. Dr. Knight’s research is broadly focused on selecting animals uniquely adapted to landscapes and promoting sustainable agriculture. Colt is the current chair for the Society of Range Management Livestock Foraging Behavior Committee\, as well as\, the North East Region Chair for the National Association of County Agricultural Agent’s Teaching and Educational Technology Committee. He also serves as an Associate Editor for the journal Ecological Processes. Course will cover male and female reproductive anatomy/physiology\, semen handling\, liquid nitrogen tank basics\, heat detection and synchronization\, AI technique\, basics of palpation\, and hands-on learning with our sophisticated Bovine Breeder AI Simulator and reproductive tracts. Our instructors will guide you through everything you need to know to get started in cattle artificial insemination. \nAre you interested in learning more about Artificial Insemination (AI) and in vitro fertilization in cattle? Have you considered utilizing AI on your farm? Would you like to have some hands-on experience with AI in cattle? This condensed\, day-long AI training course is a combination of classroom learning and hands-on AI training. We will cover topics concerning reproductive anatomy/physiology\, heat detection/synchronization\, in vitro fertilization\, and more. In addition\, participants in this class will engage in hands-on learning with semen handling\, utilizing an actual liquid nitrogen tank\, cattle palpation simulators\, and actual female reproductive tracts\, as well as all equipment associated with artificially inseminating cattle on your farm. SUMMARY:Small Ruminant Starter Weekend
DESCRIPTION:May 2-3\, 2026\, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. (both days)\nUMaine Extension Aroostook County Office\n57 Houlton Road\, Presque Isle\, Maine 04769\nCost: $50-$120 (Adult sliding scale); Free for youth \n Register Online  \nFarmers and youth are invited to a Small Ruminant Starter Weekend focused on sheep and goat husbandry. Day 1 covers parasite management in small ruminant flocks and herds. Day 2 focuses on beginning animal care in the morning and 4-H market lamb projects in the afternoon. \nMay 2: Parasite Intensive Day\nThis session is for farmers and older youth who are new to small ruminants or have experienced parasite issues in their flock or herd. The day focuses on parasite management\, with hands-on activities including fecal egg counts using a microscope and practice with the FAMACHA protocol for barber pole worm on live animals. \nParticipants will also learn to identify risk factors for meningeal worm and take part in a lungworm diagnostic exercise. Farmers are encouraged to bring a fresh fecal sample from one animal for examination. \nParticipants will become FAMACHA-certified and may purchase an anemia index card at the workshop after certification. \nMay 3: Basics of Small Ruminant Care\nMorning (9 a.m. to noon): Beginning animal care\nThe morning session covers foundational topics in sheep and goat care\, including: \n\nShelter and pasture basics\nNutrition\nHandling and hoof trimming\n\nAdults will be dismissed after the morning session. Adults who are especially interested in the afternoon show topics\, which are geared toward 4-H youth\, should contact event organizers. \nAfternoon (youth only): Show topics\nThis session is designed for youth and prepares participants for 4-H market lamb projects. Topics include market lamb selection and care\, lamb showmanship and market lamb fitting. \nBoth sessions include practical\, hands-on learning. He also co-hosts the Maine Farmcast podcast and operates Knight Family Farms with his family\, raising registered Berkshire hogs.\nDr. Zach McFarlane is an Assistant Professor and Beef Cattle Specialist for California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo\, California. Raised in a cattle and rodeo family in California\, he developed his passion for the beef industry working on ranches in the western U.S. He earned his Ph.D. in Ruminant Nutrition from the University of Tennessee\, Knoxville\, where his research focused on practical\, low-input beef production systems.
