{"id":1466,"date":"2012-09-05T09:19:14","date_gmt":"2012-09-05T13:19:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/extension.umaine.edu\/livestock\/?page_id=1466"},"modified":"2018-11-07T21:07:02","modified_gmt":"2018-11-07T21:07:02","slug":"spring-preconditioning-protocol","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/extension.umaine.edu\/livestock\/beef\/spring-preconditioning-protocol\/","title":{"rendered":"Spring Feeder Calf Sale, 2018 Preconditioning Protocol"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><strong>Maine Beef Producers Association Fall Feeder Calf Sale will be Saturday, May 21<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>For more information, contact Pete Dusoe, Feeder Calf Sale Manager at 207.416.5441 or <a href=\"mailto:pbdusoe@uninets.net\">pbdusoe@roadrunner.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Protocol detail:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Weaning to sale date must be a minimum of 35 days.\u00a0\u00a0A series of <strong>two modified live (MLV) <\/strong>respiratory complex (5-way consisting of IBR, PI<sub>3<\/sub>, BVD l &amp; ll, BRSV) vaccinations given 21-28 days apart, with the second dose no later than 14 days prior to sale.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>***Two Pasteurella vaccinations which include both pasteurella strains.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Treatment of internal and external parasites.<\/li>\n<li>Dehorning and castration must be healed.<\/li>\n<li>Clostridial (7-way) plus pinkeye plus booster.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left\" align=\"center\"><strong>Product Options<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\" align=\"center\"><strong>The products listed below are suggestions developed by the Maine Beef Producers Association.\u00a0 There may be others that provide coverage of the diseases listed above.\u00a0 To meet all conforming guidelines, make sure that the protocol details listed above are met with whatever vaccines are used. Chauyoei, Septicum, novyi, sordelli, Perfringens type C &amp; D)<\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: center\">Ultra Choice 7<\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: center\">20\/20 Vision 7<\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: center\">\u00a0Alpha-7\/MB1<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong>Yearlings that received protocol as calves need boosters.\u00a0 Yearlings not receiving protocol as calves need to follow the time schedule and receive both initial and booster vaccinations.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cattle not meeting preconditioning protocol will be separated and sold as non-conforming cattle.<\/p>\n<p>Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) recommends using subcutaneous (SC) products when possible, 16 \u2013 18 gauge needles, \u00bd &#8211; \u00be inch for SQ, 1 \u2013 1 \u00bd inch for IM.<\/p>\n<p>Vaccines work best with reduced stress including weaning, nutrition, and handling.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For those wishing to use Agri-Labs products, Titanium 5 will cover the MLV 5-way, PHM Bac-1 for Pasteurella (see below), and Cobalt 7 will cover the 7-way clostridial.<\/strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>** If other vaccines have already been purchased (for instance Pfizer\u2019s Bovi-Shield Gold) one of the following must also be provided (2 doses); Ft. Dodge\u2019s Presponse HM (NOT SQ!), Boehringer Ingelheim\u2019s Pulmo-Guard PHM-1 or Agri-Labs PHM Bac-1.\u00a0<\/strong> Pfizer\u2019s One-Shot does NOT protect against Pasteurella Multocida, therefore is not recommended.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Trade names are used for identification.
