{"id":483,"date":"2020-05-21T12:57:24","date_gmt":"2020-05-21T16:57:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/extension.umaine.edu\/maple-grading-school\/?page_id=483"},"modified":"2023-06-20T15:02:38","modified_gmt":"2023-06-20T19:02:38","slug":"handbook-for-maple-grading-and-judging-training","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/extension.umaine.edu\/maple-grading-school\/handbook-for-maple-grading-and-judging-training\/","title":{"rendered":"Handbook for Maple Grading and Judging Training"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Knowledge about grading and judging pure maple syrup is critical to supporting an industry that prides itself on exceptional quality and value.\u00a0 The purpose of this resource is to enable anyone to understand how to enter and judge the quality of maple syrup and maple products.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 1:<\/h3>\n<h4><strong>How to organize a successful and effective grading\/judging workshop<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>In the beginning, think about:<\/strong> the audience and size (20 is an optimal number), length of workshop and purpose, and presentation options. Effective preparation includes thinking about the beginning, the middle, and the end of the workshop. Use formal or informal evaluation feedback to redesign or change parts of the workshop to improve it for the next presentation.<\/p>\n<p>Some beginning logistical items to discuss include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Assess local interest \u2013 does anyone want this topic?<\/li>\n<li>Find a mutually agreeable time \u2013 weekdays, weekends, evenings?<\/li>\n<li>Find a convenient meeting place centrally located<\/li>\n<li>Advertise and send notices for registration<\/li>\n<li>Acquire good and bad syrup and\/or product samples<\/li>\n<li>Arrange for computer, nametags, external speakers, screen, handouts, grading tools, cups, spoons, refreshments, and lunch<\/li>\n<li>Plan a formal or informal evaluation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some middle logistical items to discuss include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Most people can only tolerate about six hours a day of listening.\u00a0 Plan for breaks and snacks to allow people to refresh and refocus.<\/li>\n<li>Everyone brings knowledge to the workshop.\u00a0 Giving people time to exchange ideas enriches the workshop for everyone.<\/li>\n<li>Break up lectures and hands-on activities.\u00a0 Remember that people learn much more by collaborating and doing than just by reading and listening.<\/li>\n<li>People in a group have a range of learning styles: visual, auditory, verbal, and physical\/kinesthetic.\u00a0 A mixture of audio-visual, lecture, demonstration, and hands-on activities will engage many types of learners.\u00a0 These activities can occur individually and in groups so that people can learn by doing and from each other.\u00a0 Avoid being a talking head and \u201cdeath by Powerpoint\u201d!<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Workshops can create common community goals among attendees.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Step 2<\/h3>\n<p>At the end of the workshop, give participants a chance to discuss what they have learned and about what they are still wondering.\u00a0 You can use a formal or informal evaluation.\u00a0 Give people an opportunity to talk about the pros and cons of the day and what they still would like to discuss or learn.<\/p>\n<p>For more information on conducting workshops, visit <a href=\"https:\/\/ctb.ku.edu\/en\/table-of-contents\/structure\/training-and-technical-assistance\/workshops\/main\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chapter 12.
