Youth had the opportunity to explore the world of aquatic animals through interactive activities, including a saltwater touch tank and a lobster banding station\u2014complete with plastic lobsters for practice!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While kids explored marine science, parents engaged with 4-H staff to learn more about the organization\u2019s mission and the many ways their children can get involved in 4-H programming. The event welcomed 21 youth and their families, sparking curiosity and community connections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Thank you to all who participated in making this event a success!<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Next Tri-County 4-H Sampler<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Date: June 24, 5:30 \u2013 7:00 pm<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Do you know someone who may be interested in 4-H? Penobscot, Piscataquis, and Somerset County staff are hosting workshops on the last Tuesday of each month from April to September. There will be different workshops for youth to attend each month; this month, it will be the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/extension.umaine.edu\/4h\/public-speaking\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Public Speaking Workshop<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. These scholarships recognize the leadership, dedication, and service demonstrated by 4-H members throughout their years of involvement in the program. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Abigail C. will be attending UMaine Fort Kent studying Criminal Justice\/Law Conservation.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Reegan S. will be attending Husson University studying Nursing.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ga<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">be T. will be attending UMaine Orono studying Mechanical Engineering. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Each recipient has shown a deep commitment to their communities and personal growth through a wide range of 4-H projects, volunteer efforts, and leadership roles. She shared, \u201cIt felt like a natural next step\u201d. One of her favorite memories was winning the Fryeburg Fair 4-H Market Steer Show two years in a row\u2014a moment that speaks to her dedication and hard work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This fall, Abby will be attending the University of Maine at Fort Kent to study criminal justice and law conservation. Her goal is to become a Maine Game Warden and help protect the incredible natural resources that make our state so special.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Gabe T.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gabe first joined 4-H through the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ropes and Rhinestones<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> club and later continued his journey both independently and with Shoes \u2018N Shears. Through this unique experience, he cared for his sheep, learned how to lead and show them at fairs, and even assisted in breeding alongside a local veterinarian. His sheep, Pineapple, gave birth to a baby ram named Boots during lambing season\u2014a time Gabe remembers fondly, especially since all the ewes (female sheep) gave birth one day apart! \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The experience was incredible, and I was so glad to be a part of it<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,\u201d Gabe shared.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After graduation, Gabe will attend the University of Maine at Orono to study Mechanical Engineering. We played some 4-H goat games, worked on our displays for Bangor fair and had a member from Hancock County 4-H come and visit with us. We also went to the barn and worked with the goats, doing a little practice, and learning how to weigh goat&#8217;s with a tape measure. Kaylee&#8217;s 2 goats won first place in the dry yearling class on Sunday at the Southern Maine Dairy Goat Association.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The first one was:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dragonfly SD Quinn DOB 4\/1\/2024<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Nigerian Dwarf<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The second one was:<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fox&#8217;s Pride MP Andromedia\u00a0 DOB 2\/15\/2024<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Nubian<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b>Shoes N\u2019 Shears<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Shoes N\u2019 Shears Sheep project is in full swing with training our sheep to walk. We went on an environmental outing and found some cool fungus growing on trees. The project will last from August 2025 to March 2026. See the attached flyer for more information!<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, we have openings in the \u201ctraditional\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/extension.umaine.edu\/4h\/youth\/youth-have-a-voice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">4-H Youth Have\u00a0a\u00a0Voice program<\/a>\u00a0for Maine teens (14 -19 years old or entering high\u00a0school\u00a0in the fall) who are interested in taking a more active role in serving their local communities, the state, or the country. Participants will learn leadership skills and ways to take part in civic action by completing a service project in a topic of their interest. Topics can range from agriculture, aquaculture, STEM education, animal care, renewable energies, disaster preparation, environmental conservation, food security, and more.<\/p>\n<p>Interested teens should be ready to work both independently and with groups of peers and adults. High school teens can register for the program by completing a non-competitive application found on the <a href=\"https:\/\/extension.umaine.edu\/4h\/youth\/youth-have-a-voice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">YOUth Have a Voice!program webpage<\/a>.
