{"id":12413,"date":"2020-04-16T10:29:20","date_gmt":"2020-04-16T14:29:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/extension.umaine.edu\/plugged-in\/?page_id=12413"},"modified":"2024-01-11T10:12:28","modified_gmt":"2024-01-11T15:12:28","slug":"video-tip-sheet-checklist","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/extension.umaine.edu\/plugged-in\/technology-marketing-communications\/video-tip-sheet-checklist\/","title":{"rendered":"Video Tip Sheet\/Checklist: Preparation and Presentation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The UMaine Extension Communications and Marketing Team has seen some great video ideas and questions coming through our inboxes recently, so it seemed a good time to add this video tip sheet to our resources.\u00a0This collection of does <strong>not<\/strong> focus on different tools for recording videos; instead, it primarily lists prompts and serves as a checklist for the preparation and presentation of video content.<\/p>\n<p>As a reminder, any video produced as an Extension resource will be housed on the UMaine YouTube channel to ensure seamless accessibility.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Please, allow 72 hours (nine eight-hour business days) turnaround time <\/strong>for the Extension Communications and Marketing Team to fully review your video, especially if edits are needed, and get it uploaded to YouTube with a link generated.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>We prioritize first, in our work queue, those videos to be edited that will accompany communications and marketing projects. For example: an Extension web page\/section or a social media campaign.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We hope you find these tips useful. We&#8217;re here to help!<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"#location\">Location<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#story-activity\">Story\/Activity<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#props\">Props<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#outline-notes\">Outline\/Notes<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#clothing\">Clothing<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#music\">Music<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#branding-style\">Branding\/Style<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#edit\">Editing<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#downsizing-file\">Downsizing Files for Upload to a Shared Drive and YouTube<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#caption\">Captioning<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#b-roll\">B-Roll<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><a id=\"location\"><\/a>Location<\/h3>\n<p>When setting up the space\/location you want to use to record your video, ensure adequate lighting, minimize noise interference, and remove unwanted distractions as much as possible.<\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"story-activity\"><\/a>Story\/Activity<\/h3>\n<p>Think about the story you want to tell and\/or activity you want to demonstrate. With that in mind, create a list of what and who you want to include and highlight.<\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"props\"><\/a>Props<\/h3>\n<p>Make sure you have any props or accessories you want to use or feature.<\/p>\n<p>Do not use or refer to name-branded products on camera. For instance, instead of showing boxes of recipe ingredients or other supplies used during an activity, put the ingredients in small bowls; or place supplies like tin foil or crayons ready to use, out of their boxes. Or cover the brand name on an item with a piece of opaque tape (for example, masking or duct tape).<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, rather than identifying items by brand names such as \u2018Kleenex\u2019 or \u2018Reynolds Wrap\u2019 while discussing instructions, use generic terms like \u2018tissues\u2019 or \u2018tin foil\u2019.<\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"outline-notes\"><\/a>Outline or Notes<\/h3>\n<p>If there are speaking parts, draft an outline of talking points or, if the video is longer and involves multiple people, a script everyone agrees on. Don\u2019t worry about memorizing word-for-word though; it\u2019s more important to feel comfortable with your subject. That will translate to a more natural tone and feel on camera.<\/p>\n<p>Please remember to have completed UMaine photo release forms on file for any people appearing in the video who are not employees. Avoid filming youth in identifiable locations; if name tags are being used, do not show youth names.<\/p>\n<p>If recording a webinar, let participants know beforehand they&#8217;ll need to complete a release form or they can choose to hide their image and\/or name while on camera.<\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"clothing\"><\/a>Clothing<\/h3>\n<p>Wear Extension apparel if at all possible. If that\u2019s not possible, wear dark or light blue colors. Avoid other branded clothing &#8212; logos or recognizable names or images &#8212; to ensure copyright infringements are minimized.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Also avoid all white, all black or shiny fabrics.<\/li>\n<li>Be conscious of large or dangling accessories that could interfere with the video, audio or any auto-closed captioning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><a id=\"music\"><\/a>Music<\/h3>\n<p>It can be fun to include music in your video, particularly if speaking parts are non-existent or limited. Any music files used must be copyright-free and royalty-free. There are many sources for royalty-free music, though some charge by the file or on a subscription basis. Some of the better free music sources are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/freemusicarchive.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Free Music Archive<\/a> (FMA website) is about the best known, lots of files to choose from;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/search\/sounds\/?filter.license=to_share\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SoundCloud website<\/a> is also a good resource;<\/li>\n<li>YouTube does have its own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/audiolibrary\/music?nv=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">YouTube Audio Library<\/a> with public domain music files.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A good explanation\/article of copyright-free vs. royalty-free files: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dl-sounds.com\/copyright-free-vs-royalty-free\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Copyright-Free VS Royalty-Free<\/a> (DL Sounds original audio website).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>(If you are producing video clips using the app Adobe Spark, the music collection included with that app is available to use <strong>within<\/strong> the app, free.)<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"branding-style\"><\/a>Branding and Style<\/h3>\n<p>For proper branding:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use the <strong>full-color<\/strong> Extension logo either on the opening frame or in the closing frame with other credits. For identifying presenters and other participants, use the UMaine shield as the left-hand leader in the lower third followed by the name (and title if applicable).<\/li>\n<li>Visit the article: <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/typito\/5-tips-for-adding-lower-third-on-videos-160d14ed9c85\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">5 Tips For Adding Lower Third On Videos<\/a> (Medium.com website) for a brief overview of the topic of &#8220;lower thirds.&#8221; Examples can be found on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PL8D1C914E1E1FEA69\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cooperative Extension YouTube playlist<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The use of our name follows the same style as found in written materials:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>FULL <\/strong>name, <strong>University of Maine Cooperative Extension<\/strong>, on the <strong>first<\/strong> mention;<\/li>\n<li><strong>UMaine Extension<\/strong> on the <strong>second<\/strong> mention;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Extension<\/strong> thereafter in the same piece.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><a id=\"edit\"><\/a>Editing Your Video<\/h3>\n<p>We do not have a video editor on the Communications and Marketing Team. YouTube provides auto-captioning. To get the best results, speakers should speak one at a time and talk slowly and clearly when being recorded.
