The contribution may be to <em>me<\/em> as an individual, to <em>us<\/em> in relationship with one another, to the <em>team<\/em> or <em>family<\/em>, or to the <em>mission<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Giving general appreciation, like \u201cGreat Job\u201d or \u201cYou\u2019re the best\u201d is vague and the problem with these types of appreciations is they really don\u2019t let the receiver know what it is that is being appreciated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By its nature, an appreciation is a judgment, right? We are judging the other person positively! While most people enjoy being appreciated for how they contribute, some experience discomfort with appreciations that aren\u2019t specific and tied to why they matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Specific appreciation feedback looks like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote><h4><strong>Elements of Appreciation Feedback<\/strong><\/h4><ol>\n<li><strong>Observation<\/strong><br>Example:&nbsp; <em>\u201cI saw you picking up trash in the warehouse this morning!\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>How this impacted me, why it mattered<\/strong><br>Example: <em>\u201cI\u2019m really appreciating that because I think having the area clean makes it safer for everyone.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reflect<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Try this writing exercise and fill out the questions below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Think of one person to whom you would like to give some appreciation feedback (it can be someone at work or someone outside of work)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What <em>specifically<\/em> did they do that you are appreciating? Call on your observation skills!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How might you word your appreciation to them using the Elements of Appreciation above?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Practice<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Practice with a partner.
