Container gardening allows you to position plants for optimum light and warmth. Inspect vegetable plants regularly to forestall any developing problems.<\/p>\n<\/caption>\n

Symptoms<\/th>\n Cause<\/strong><\/span><\/th>\n Corrective measures<\/strong><\/span><\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n
Plants tall, spindly, and unproductive<\/td>\nInsufficient light<\/td>\nMove the container to a location that receives more light.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Excessive nitrogen<\/td>\nReduce feeding frequency.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Plants yellowing from the bottom; poor color, lack vigor<\/td>\nExcessive water<\/td>\nReduce watering frequency; check for good drainage.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Low fertility<\/td>\nIncrease fertility level of the base solution.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Plants wilt although sufficient water is present<\/td>\nPoor drainage and aeration<\/td>\nUse soil mix containing higher percentage organic matter; increase the number of holes for drainage.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Marginal burning of leaf edges<\/td>\nHigh salts<\/td>\nLeach container with tap water at regular intervals.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Plants stunted in growth; sickly, purplish color.<\/td>\nLow temperature<\/td>\nRelocate container to warmer area.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Low phosphate<\/td>\nIncrease phosphate level in base solution.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Holes in leaves; leaves distorted in shape<\/td>\nInsects<\/td>\nHand-pick or use insecticidal spray.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Leaves with spots, dead, dried areas, or powdery or rusty areas.<\/td>\nPlant diseases<\/td>\nRemove diseased areas where observed. Call your University of Maine Cooperative Extension office or bring in a leaf for diagnosis.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
