Join UMaine Cooperative Extension and Maine Audubon as we explore how our home landscapes can be more beautiful as well as beneficial to birds and other wildlife. Learn how easy and rewarding growing native plant species and paying closer attention to the ecology around us can be.

Program Description

Gardening for Wildlife Online Short Course

Join UMaine Cooperative Extension and Maine Audubon as we explore how our home landscapes can be more beautiful as well as beneficial to birds and other wildlife. Learn how easy and rewarding growing native plant species and paying closer attention to the ecology around us can be.  Instructors – Eric Topper, Director of Education for Maine Audubon and Pamela Hargest, Horticulture Professional for UMaine Cooperative Extension, Cumberland

Format – Online Zoom sessions (45-minute presentation, 15-minute Q&A)

Online Courses:
Backyard Ecology 101 – Wednesday, June 3rd, 4-5pm
Get an introduction to the wildlife and natural processes that have been occurring
around us, in some cases for centuries. We will focus on how simple it can be to
restore, observe, and conserve it.
The Birds of Maine – Wednesday, June 10th, 4-5pm
Learn more about the birds that share our landscapes. We will profile some of Maine’s
avian residents and visitors, and look at what our landscapes should do for them.
Selecting Native Plants – Wednesday, June 17th, 4-5pm
We will introduce our favorite native plants for your home, as well as the online
resources we use to choose them. We will also tackle where to find these plants.
Grow Your Own Native Plants – Wednesday, June 24th, 4-5pm
Learn to work with nature to propagate your own plants from seeds. We will cover how different seeds germinate, where to get seeds, basic seed collection, and some of the proven techniques.
