Loons in Maine

Do you have an interest in monitoring loons?

2 adult loons and 2 baby loonsMaine Audubon and Signs of the Seasons are working together to learn more about loon populations in New England!

Signs of the Seasons is looking to add more data around loon phenology in Maine, and we hope loon count volunteers can help! Information on the timing of migration, mating, and the appearance of chicks will aid in forming an accurate picture of loon populations in Maine.

Interested volunteers will attend a training that includes information on the history and science of phenology, the connection to our changing climate and an overview of the current research being conducted. Additionally, participants will learn how their observations become valuable data when added to Nature’s Notebook, the online database hosted by the National Phenology Network.

If you are interested in monitoring loon phenology and attending a  training, fill out our Volunteer Interest Form.
