On April 10th, Maria Janowiak<\/a> gave a seminar titled \u201cUnderstanding Forest Vulnerability to Climate Change\u201d at the University of Maine. Maria is the Deputy Director of the Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science<\/a> (NIAC), a program of the U.S. Forest Service. In her presentation, Maria provided a summary of a vulnerability assessment<\/a> that NIAC recently published that focused on New England forests. The assessment examined how forest ecosystems might respond to a range of future climate scenarios and evaluated where ecosystems were vulnerable to these changes. Maria specifically mentioned the importance of phenology<\/strong> and how phenological observations provide a way of capturing slow changes that occur over a wide geographic range. <\/span><\/p>\n
