Camp sessions offering Sailing Instruction

Blueberry Cove offers sailing instruction in two week sessions as part of our day camp, residential camp and Captain’s Quest programs to accommodate the needs of just about every camper who wants to learn to sail!  Our sailing programs combine learning sailing skills with a traditional summer camp experience.  The best of both worlds!

Sailing instruction is provided by the St. George Community Sailing Foundation, which teaches sailing, seamanship and water safety to children and adults on Maine’s Saint George peninsula. The program also encourages respect for our water environment and honors Maine’s nautical history.

Led by five experienced instructors, at least three of them certified by the US Sailing Association, campers are given the opportunity to learn about:

  • How sails work
  • Rigging the boat
  • Sailing upwind and downwind
  • Capsize and overboard recovery
  • Leaving and returning to a dock or mooring

  • Knots and lines
  • Ecology of St. George harbors
  • History of St. George sailing

And above all, have plenty of FUN!

Residential Sailors

Sailing is an additional focus for campers who attend two consecutive weeks of camp and the rest of the day is spent doing regular residential camp activities.  Campers attending weeks 3 & 4 stay over the weekend and do special weekend trips.  Campers attending sailing during weeks 5 & 6 go home on the weekend in between.  Campers attending weeks 7 & 8 have the option of staying over the weekend but can choose to go home.

Day Sailors

A two-week, Monday through Friday, Day Camp offered to 9-12 year old day campers who want to learn to sail! Campers spend the morning sailing with the St. George Community Sailing Foundation and afternoons enjoying traditional camp activities with the Skippers or Voyagers.  A cabin tent tucked in the forest is a cool place for preteens to recharge for an afternoon packed with excitement!  Day Sailors spend afternoons in their own peer group, allowing for more independence and a broader range of interactions within camp.
