Please be aware that highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) will be a challenge this year.<\/h3>\n<p>We have the Cornell Wildlife folks to thank for passing along these USDA and USGS tools for finding out where avian influenza is causing concerns right now. <strong>If you would like to know more about whether to let your poultry flocks free-range this year, please check these sites to see where HPAI is currently found in wild birds or in poultry in the US.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aphis.usda.gov\/aphis\/ourfocus\/animalhealth\/animal-disease-information\/avian\/avian-influenza\/hpai-2022\/2022-hpai-wild-birds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HPAI in US Wild birds<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/centers\/nwhc\/science\/distribution-highly-pathogenic-avian-influenza-north-america-20212022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HPAI Current Sites by State Map<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>What to do if HPAI is in your area?<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>For biosecurity info<\/strong>, see USDA&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aphis.usda.gov\/aphis\/ourfocus\/animalhealth\/animal-disease-information\/avian\/defend-the-flock-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Defend the Flock Program<\/a> website.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Keep your flock separated from wild birds<\/strong>, or areas where they have been.<\/li>\n<li><strong>If you have bird feeders, consider taking them down<\/strong> until this HPAI outbreak is over. Encouraging wild birds to gather may spread HPAI among the wild birds, and also to your poultry.<\/li>\n<li><strong>If you have a wire coop or &#8220;tractor&#8221; for your birds, put a cover on the roof<\/strong> (keep wild birds&#8217; feces from falling onto your birds).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Raising organic or free-range poultry?<\/strong> Contact your certification agency to see if they will allow poultry to be kept indoors during the HPAI outbreak.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Are your birds ill?<\/strong> If you suspect HPAI, call the regional hotline at 866-536-7593.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Planning for your poultry flocks?
