Cindy L. Griffin to receive Extension community service award at annual meeting
The Washington County Extension Association will hold its annual meeting, featuring the Norman W. Duzen Community Service Award, on Saturday, May 31 beginning at 10 a.m. at the county Extension office located at the O’Brien House on the campus of University of Maine at Machias.
Cindy L. Griffin of Whiting will receive the Norman W. Duzen Community Service Award, presented annually to an individual who has contributed as a volunteer to the lives of Washington County citizens. Griffin shares her talents at the Porter Memorial Library. Library Director Lee Downing states, “When Cindy Griffin reports for volunteer duty at the library, she expects to work, work and work! She’s on a first-name basis with thousands of used books that are donated to the library each year because she has unpacked, sorted, shelved, re-shelved and re-packed them all. When she isn’t getting a workout by lifting heavy books, Cindy is at the front desk, either performing complex administrative routines or documenting those routines so the rest of us can learn to do them. Behind the busy demeanor is a kind and responsible professional who always thinks about helping others.” The award’s namesake, Norman W. Duzen, was a dedicated civic and religious leader for over fifty years and had a great love for the people of Down East Maine.
Eric Jones and Kyle Winslow will receive the University of Maine Volunteer Pen Award. Jones and Winslow are being recognized for their contributions to the Washington County Extension Association.
This free, public event will feature lunch beginning at 11:30 a.m. and showcase many programs and services offered by Extension. Attendees can pick up free seeds, tick spoons and soil tests while supplies last. Attendees will enjoy a goat petting zoo and a screen printing activity.
Participants are asked to register for the meal on the event webpage by May 21. For more information or to request a reasonable accommodation, contact UMaine Extension in Washington County at 207.255.3345 or 800.287.1542 (toll-free in Maine).
