SUMMARY:Dining with Diabetes Downeast - Cherryfield
DESCRIPTION:A Program for People with Diabetes and Their Families \nThis free program complements medical care by teaching people with type 2 diabetes or prediabetes\, and their family members and caregivers what they can do to help control blood sugar\, blood pressure and cholesterol. UMaine Extension registered dietitian and nutritionist Alan Majka will provide presentations\, lead discussions and demonstrate preparation of nutritious recipes that participants can sample. \nParticipants will meet once a week for four weeks.  You will learn how to select and prepare foods that help to control blood sugar\, cholesterol and blood pressure.  There will be an opportunity to taste a variety of main dishes\, side dishes\, and desserts. \nClass size is limited to 20. \nFood and supplies for this program provided with generous support from Hannaford Supermarkets. \nIf you are a person with a disability and need an accommodation to participate in this program\, please call Tara Wood at 207.255.3345 or 800.287.1542 (in Maine) to discuss your needs. SUMMARY:Produce Safety Alliance Grower Training
DESCRIPTION:Who Should Attend\nFruit and vegetable growers and others interested in learning about produce safety\, the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Produce Safety Rule\, farm food safety best practices\, and co-management of natural resources and food safety. The PSA Grower Training Course is one way to satisfy the FSMA Produce Safety Rule requirement outlined in § 112.22(c) that requires “At least one supervisor or responsible party for your farm must have successfully completed food safety training at least equivalent to that received under standardized curriculum recognized as adequate by the Food and Drug Administration.” \nWhat to Expect at the PSA Grower Training Course\nThe trainers will spend approximately seven hours of instruction time covering content contained in these seven modules: \n\nIntroduction to Produce Safety\nWorker Health\, Hygiene\, and Training\nSoil Amendments\nWildlife\, Domesticated Animals\, and Land Use\nAgricultural Water (Part I: Production Water; Part II: Postharvest Water)\nPostharvest Handling and Sanitation\nHow to Develop a Farm Food Safety Plan\n\nIn addition to learning about produce safety best practices\, key parts of the FSMA Produce Safety Rule requirements are outlined within each module. There will be time for questions and discussion\, so participants should come prepared to share their experiences and produce safety questions. \nBenefits of Attending the Course\nThe course will provide a foundation of farm food safety best practices and co-management information\, FSMA Produce Safety Rule requirements\, and details on how to develop a farm food safety plan. Individuals who participate in this course are expected to gain a basic understanding of: \n\nMicroorganisms relevant to produce safety and where they may be found on the farm\nHow to identify microbial risks\, practices that reduce risks\, and how to begin implementing produce safety practices on the farm\nParts of a farm food safety plan and how to begin writing one\nRequirements in the FSMA Produce Safety Rule and how to meet them.\n\nAfter attending the entire course\, participants will be eligible to receive a certificate from the Association of Food and Drug Officials (AFDO) that verifies they have completed the training course. SUMMARY:#EmpoweringMEandYou – Stress Less Teen Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The National 4-H Healthy Living Summit Team from Maine will be presenting their Stress Less lesson plan developed at the 2019 Summit and presented at the 2020 Summit. Any youth ages 13 – 18 are welcome and encouraged to attend. 4-H participation is not required! \nThis hour-long lesson was designed by and for teens to educate others on the effects of stress and how they can combat and cope with stress in their daily lives\, and the lives of others. Youth will start by identifying what the effects of stress are\, and then have the opportunity to practice a variety of coping strategies that can help to reduce these effects on the body. Youth will also learn and practice how to reframe their own negative self-talk and redirect that of others as it relates to stress. DESCRIPTION:University of Maine Cooperative Extension 4-H members who have been selected for the National 4-H Healthy Living Summit 2020 team will offer a free online workshop for teens from 6–7 p.m. May 5. \n“Don’t Fall Into the Thinking Trap” is designed to educate youth ages 13–18 about some common negative thought patterns and how to develop useful coping strategies. Participants will engage in small group learning\, determine their own thinking patterns and learn ways to revise unhealthy thinking styles.  \nThis is the third #EmpoweringMEandYou lesson\, part of a multi-year project affiliated with the National Youth Summits on Healthy Living.
