SUMMARY:#EmpoweringMEandYou – Stress Less Teen Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The National 4-H Healthy Living Summit Team from Maine will be presenting their Stress Less lesson plan developed at the 2019 Summit and presented at the 2020 Summit. Any youth ages 13 – 18 are welcome and encouraged to attend. 4-H participation is not required! \nThis hour-long lesson was designed by and for teens to educate others on the effects of stress and how they can combat and cope with stress in their daily lives\, and the lives of others. Youth will start by identifying what the effects of stress are\, and then have the opportunity to practice a variety of coping strategies that can help to reduce these effects on the body. Youth will also learn and practice how to reframe their own negative self-talk and redirect that of others as it relates to stress. DESCRIPTION:University of Maine Cooperative Extension 4-H members who have been selected for the National 4-H Healthy Living Summit 2020 team will offer a free online workshop for teens from 6–7 p.m. May 5. \n“Don’t Fall Into the Thinking Trap” is designed to educate youth ages 13–18 about some common negative thought patterns and how to develop useful coping strategies. Participants will engage in small group learning\, determine their own thinking patterns and learn ways to revise unhealthy thinking styles.  \nThis is the third #EmpoweringMEandYou lesson\, part of a multi-year project affiliated with the National Youth Summits on Healthy Living. DESCRIPTION:Join UMaine 4-H staff for a variety of virtual workshops designed to support those working directly with youth. Workshops will be a blend of online and independent (offline) work. Join one workshop or all four. Certificates for contact hours will be provided to attendees.  In order to view workshop visual aids\, joining with video capability is preferred. Registration is required at least 24-hours in advance.  \nThis will be an introduction to creative problem solving through the concepts of education through making. Participants will discuss making through education and have an opportunity to explore a DIY\, hands-on making and tinkering challenge that could be replicated with youth. This learning process helps students develop a mindset of curiosity\, and provides language tools to actively and directly engage with the natural world. This simple routine can help students get beyond seeing nature as a “green blur\,” and lead them to never be bored in nature again. (2 contact hours)

SUMMARY:Ticks in Maine – Online Zoom Course
DESCRIPTION:Ticks in Maine will be the focus of a free University of Maine Cooperative Extension webinar on Thursday\, June 25 from 1–2:30 p.m.\, led by Griffin Dill and Dr. Beatrice Szantyr. Dill is the manager of the Tick Lab at Cooperative Extension Diagnostic and Research Laboratory. Dill coordinates the Integrated Tick Management Program\, including the tick identification and tick-borne disease testing services. The program conducts surveillance of ticks and tick-borne pathogens to track their distribution\, detect trends or changes in tick activity\, and identify areas of risk for tick-borne disease in Maine. More information about the Tick Lab is online.  Dr. Szantyr\, who specializes in internal medicine\, and pediatrics and adolescent medicine\, serves as medical advisor for MaineLyme. The Maine-based nonprofit is dedicated to decreasing the occurrence of Lyme and related tick-borne diseases in Maine through awareness\, prevention\, education and advocacy. Online registration is required. Once registered\, participants will be sent a Zoom link and phone number to connect with the program.
