<\/a>Washington County 4-H Members Attend the Big E<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Big E\u201d, also known as The Eastern States Exposition (ESE), is billed as “New England’s Great State Fair”. It is the largest agricultural event on the eastern seaboard and the seventh-largest fair in the nation! 4-H\u2019ers from each of the six New England states are invited to participate in the fair through livestock shows, public speaking demonstrations, hands-on activities, and more.<\/p>\n

Hope of North Woods 4-H Club wrote this about her experience attending the event.<\/p>\n

\u201cFriday, we arrived and set up our kennel area. Aslan got to walk around get settled in. They checked in our photos and medical kits. That evening we had to take our 100-question quiz. Saturday we had opening ceremony. Cali Berry carried in the Maine state flag. Then we had obedience and Aslan participated in it. He just didn\u2019t place top as he just wasn\u2019t feeling it that day. That afternoon we had quiz bowl. My team placed 2nd. We had agility that evening which Aslan loved. He got a chance to let out his zoomies. Sunday we had showmanship. We won our class and went on to overall. We didn\u2019t take overall but we had fun competing for it. We ended with closing ceremony.\u00a0 Aslan and I got an award for promoting the dog team in our state. Then, we drove the 8 hour ride home. Aslan and I slept the whole ride.\u201d<\/p>\n

Phoebe: “My favorite part of going to the Big E was seeing Azzy do such a good job.
\nIt was also fun seeing the sheep show. I liked watching them prance around all pretty.
\nI very much want to go again.”<\/p>\n

Ruth: \u201cMy favorite part was watching Azzy win the blue ribbon. I liked the rides too! Of course I want to go again!\u201d<\/p>\n

A warm thank you to the Harmon Foundation for giving partial funding for travel to this event.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Requirement for Clubs\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 The 4-H year officially ended on September 28th. Please, finalize your club treasurer\u2019s report and send or bring it to the office. We will make a photocopy of it and give it to the auditors. Thank you for complying with this mandate from the University of Maine.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Project Record Reminder:<\/strong>\u00a0Project Records were due in the Machias office on Friday, September 28th. Please turn them in if you have completed them. Thank you.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

<\/a>Reenrollment 2018<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Another 4-H year will begin soon! Reenrollment packets have been mailed. Please let me know if you did not receive your forms. Please be sure to follow the instructions. Reminder: There will be a $1 Accident Insurance Fee per member and leader, $2 for horse members and leaders. Clubs may vote to use money from their treasury or to individually contribute the fees. This applies to new and returning members and leaders. Note- members pay the fee only once regardless of how many clubs they are in. Please submit fees with your enrollment forms. The cost of receiving the newsletter by mail is $8. We would like to have your re-enrollment paperwork returned by Monday, November 26. The absolute deadline is Friday, December 28th. No exceptions will be allowed after that date.<\/p>\n

This year we received photo submissions from Cloverbud Ruth B of North Woods 4-H Club. These are the wonderful photos she submitted. Great job Ruth!<\/p>\n

<\/a>North Woods 4-H Club went to Windsor Fair<\/strong><\/p>\n

Three North Woods 4-H Club members went to Windsor fair and showed in the American Boer Goat Association and youth goat show. All three girls did very well coming home with smiles, memories and even a few blue ribbons.<\/p>\n

4-H Tech Changemakers attended Washington Academy\u2019s Open House on September 12th.<\/p>\n

Youth were able to sign-up to participate in various aspects of the project.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Cooking with the Kids<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

Baked Apple Crisp<\/strong><\/p>\n

Makes 12 servings<\/p>\n

Ingredients:<\/p>\n

8 cups unpeeled, cored and thinly sliced apples (about 8 medium apples)<\/p>\n

2 Tablespoons sugar<\/p>\n

1 1\/2 Tablespoons lemon juice<\/p>\n

4 teaspoons ground cinnamon (use 1\/2 at a time)<\/p>\n

1 1\/2 cups applesauce, unsweetened<\/p>\n

1 cup uncooked rolled oats<\/p>\n

1\/2 cup light brown sugar, packed<\/p>\n

1\/3 cup all-purpose flour<\/p>\n

1\/3 cup evaporated skim milk<\/p>\n

Topping:<\/p>\n

1 cup vanilla yogurt, nonfat<\/p>\n

Directions:<\/p>\n

Preheat oven to 350F.<\/p>\n

Prepare a two-quart casserole dish with nonstick cooking spray.<\/p>\n

In a large bowl, toss apples with sugar, 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon, and lemon juice. Place apples into casserole dish and spread the applesauce over the apples. Combine rolled oats, brown sugar, flour, evaporated milk, dry milk powder, and the other 2 teaspoons cinnamon.<\/p>\n

Bake for 35 to 40 minutes until lightly brown and bubbly. Cool slightly, but serve while warm with the topping of vanilla yogurt.<\/p>\n

  1. 4-H Volunteers! We’d love your feedback on Project Records!<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    You are invited to participate in a statewide research project being conducted by Kristy Ouellette and Jennifer Lobley, Extension Educators at the University of Maine Cooperative Extension. 4-H volunteers and staff from all over Maine will participate in this study. You must be 18 years old or older to participate in this focus group.<\/p>\n

    Purpose of this research project: We recognize the value of our 4-H volunteers. As a state we are rolling out new 4-H Project Records. We want to have a better understanding of your beliefs and understandings of the function of these records.<\/p>\n

    What will you be asked to do? There will be two focus groups held on October 22, 2018. These focus groups will occur using Zoom, a videoconference software so you can join the session from your personal computer or by phone. Up to 12 volunteers can participate in each session. If you decide to participate, you will be asked to participate in an online focus group with questions pertaining to your attitudes and beliefs regarding 4-H project records in Maine. The focus group will take you approximately 45-60 minutes.<\/p>\n

    Compensation: By participating in the focus group you will be eligible to enter a drawing for a Hannaford<\/p>\n

    Gift Card. Upon completion, focus group participants will be given access to a link to a form where you will enter the drawing.<\/p>\n
