Club News
Acton Homesteaders
Acton Homesteaders have been busy working with the Forgotten Initiative to provide goodie bags for kiddos in Foster Care at the bicycle event (32 kids received new bikes and helmets!). On June 17, Aubuchan Hardware had our club over to host a BBQ and bottle drive. It was a lot of fun! We have been studying chickens and are looking forward to showing off our knowledge at the fairs!
Lucky Charms
At the club meeting on June 9, Tia taught us about CPR and first aid.
At the club meeting on June 23, we discussed participating in the Strutt Your Mutt walk again. Our July 28 meeting will be our planning meeting for the walk.
On June 28 at the Acton Fairgrounds from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM, there is a Sheep Demo and the Malings will be there with sheep.
Ossipee Valley Fair is July 6-9. Our goat and sheep kids showed Saturday.
The club will be setting up a poultry demo for the kids who would like to learn how to show their poultry this year.
Cortney has a surf class possible for the club; she will be giving us a choice of dates.
4 Leaf Clover
The club planted flowers around Shapleigh to beautify their community. Afterward, they enjoyed ice cream!
Boots and Buckles
Boots and Buckles have been busy. We ran the food booth as a fundraiser for two Sundays at Mousam Saddle and Harness Club in Kennebunk. We also were there supporting our two members Hailey and Mareea. They did fabulous and both went home with many blue ribbons! Congrats girls!
Kidding Around
In June, Kidding Around 4-H Club met on the 26th at Nate’s grandparents’ house. We learned all about llamas with Gidget the llama as our guest star. The kids all took turns walking her in the field. Also in attendance were Nilla and Pearl, the pug mix puppies, both of which are just around 8 weeks old. We talked about the Ossipee Valley Fair Exhibit Hall and getting our paperwork ready for the Fair Season.
Club member, Riley, attended 4-H@UMaine and experienced college life by taking “classes” from University of Maine professors.
Nature Kids
Nature Kids made aprons at their last meeting. Members are looking forward to wearing their new aprons when they work in the Acton Fair 4-H food booth.
Mane Moxie
Mane Moxie visited the center for wildlife in York for their field trip. The members were able to get up close and personal with many different animals such as porcupines, reptiles, owls, vultures and much more. Our members had voted to donate needed items to the center for wildlife. Members brought their donations the day of our trip and it made many of the animals so happy especially Henry the porcupine.
4-H Dog Clinic
The 4-H dog clinic was held on Monday, June 26, in Buxton. Sara Conant from Cumberland County 4-H staff led the clinic. The kids practiced obedience and rally obedience. Sara told us that York County 4-Hers are eligible to show in the 4-H dog show at the Cumberland County Fair.
If you are showing livestock at a fair, make sure you have the proper liability insurance or are a member of the Maine Association of Livestock Exhibitors (MALE).

York County Shooters 4-H Field Day
If you are a 4-H’er with a passion for shooting sports OR have never tried but would like to, the York County Shooters would like to invite you to their first 4-H Field Day on Saturday July 29 from 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM at York County Fish and Game Club, Lyman, ME.
4-H’ers will be get a chance to shoot in several disciplines including Pellet Rifle, Pistol, and Archery as well as see demonstrations by the YC Shooters members in Trap (shotgun) and .22 Rifle.
York County Fish and Game association has also offered a Fresh Water Fishing Demo with the help of a YCF&G fishing instructor. Participants will get information and tips on fresh water fishing and then a chance to fish on the YCF&G state stocked pond! This field day is open to currently enrolled York County 4-H’ers ages 9-18.
Registration is required and space is limited so please register in advance by sending a message or email to Kelly Goss at yc4hshooters@yahoo.com.
Please include 4-H’ers Name, DOB (MUST BE 4-H 9 YEARS OLD), Club they are enrolled in, if they have any shooting sports experience, and what disciplines they are interested in or if there is one they would NOT like to participate in.
Registration closes at 4:00 PM on Wednesday July 26.
Tentative Schedule for Field Day
- Sign in will start at 8:00 AM, followed by a brief safety session that will begin at 8:30 AM. Participants will then be seperated into groups and head to the range with instructors.
- LUNCH — 11:30 -12:15. All participants should bring a water bottle and a lunch.
- Fishing Demo will be after lunch and participants may chose to do fishing instead of shotgun.
- Parents are welcome to come and may even get to participate at the end.
If particpants have ear or eye protection of their own, please bring it. All firearms, bows, arrows, safety equipment, and ammunition will be provided. PLEASE DO NOT BRING ANY OF YOUR PERSONAL FIREARMS, AMMUNITION, BOWS or ARROWS. Please park at the YCF&G Range, NOT at the lodge. Signs will be posted.

Register Now for 2017 Maine 4-H Days
Maine 4-H Days will take place July 21 – 23, 2017 at the Windsor Fairgrounds. If you do not have online access, please contact your local UMaine Extension county office for paper copies of the forms. Information and registration materials are available online.
ESE 4-H Beef Program Scholarship
The ESE Beef Program Committee annually sponsors two $1,000 scholarships for high school seniors and current college students who have participated in the Eastern States Exposition 4-H Beef Program for two or more years (does not have to be consecutive).

Big E Ruby Morris 4-H Scholarship
This year Maine will select one recipient for the $500 Ruby Morris 4-H Scholarship. Potential candidates must have been a 4-H program participant at the Big E for at least one year, the year of the scholarship presentation, or prior. The scholarship must be used for two or four Year College, professional training, technical schools, etc.

National 4-H Dairy Conference
The 2017 National 4-H Dairy Conference will take place in Madison, Wisconsin October 1 – 4, 2017. Youth must be age 15 as of January 1st and not older than age 18. More information and an application can be found at: National 4-H Dairy Conference.
Deadline: Application must be received by the 4-H office by July 10, 2017. Applicants will participate in a phone interview on July 15, 2017. An interview will need to be scheduled by calling Stephanie at 207.860.0979.
Kennebec 4-H Horse Shows Open Statewide! Join us!
Kennebec 4-H Horse Shows are no cost to enter and are open to all 4-H’ers statewide.
- Monmouth Fair 4-H Horse Show, August 2 at 1:00 PM.

4-H Egg Business Project
Interested in earning money and having happy hens as co-workers?

4-H Demonstrations at Eastern States Exposition
Maine 4-H at Eastern States Exposition travel dates are September 23, 24, and 25. A $25.00 registration fee includes travel by coach bus to and from The Big E, meals, and two nights lodging in the Moses Dormitory on the fairgrounds.
Youth will work in teams demonstrating STEM activities and 4-H projects. Join our group now and help show fair goers what Maine 4-H is all about!
Top finishers in the Maine 4-H Public Speaking Tournament who earned a spot on the Maine 4-H Communications Team will be traveling with us and presenting from the New England Center Stage.
Participants will need money to purchase meals on the bus ride down and back along with any spending money you wish to bring for your stay at the fair. There is a lot to do and see at The Big E Fair that is free of cost!
