KPE 265 is a 3-credit course focused on skills in outdoor recreation.\u00a0This is an introductory course in outdoor and adventure activities, forming the foundation of an outdoor leadership education. The course focuses primarily on participation in four different activity categories: canoeing; bouldering and climbing; hiking and orienteering; and challenge course.\u00a0KPE 207 is a 1-credit course where participants\u00a0become certified\u00a0in wilderness first aid (WFA) and CPR.<\/p>\n<p>Registration:\u00a0Participants must complete enrollment with the University of Maine Early College Program. Try out some of these ideas the next time you are working with club members or a group of youth:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Know each young person\u2019s name and call them by it.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/strong>\u201cHi, Maria! Glad you\u2019re here today!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Use icebreakers and team-building activities.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/strong>These short activities spark fun, help youth learn about each other, and build early connections.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Create safe spaces, including a shared set of ground rules.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/strong>At the beginning of the year, ask the group: \u201cWhat do we need to agree on so everyone feels respected and comfortable here?\u201d Write down their ideas (like listening when others speak, no put-downs, etc.) and post the \u201cClub Agreements\u201d on the wall each meeting.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Encourage engagement.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/strong>Rotate leadership roles each meeting\u2014timekeeper, snack helper, or discussion leader\u2014so every youth has a chance to contribute and feel ownership.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Utilize discussions to help youth learn from one another.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/strong>After a project activity, ask open-ended questions like, \u201cWhat worked well in your group? What was challenging? What would you try differently next time?\u201d Then have youth share with a partner or small group before bringing answers back to the whole club.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Cultivate shared experiences.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/strong>Plan a simple community service project, like making thank-you cards for local first responders, where all members contribute to a common goal.
