Event: Hancock County Master Gardener Volunteer Training
When: Fri, Feb 3 8:30 am – 12:00 pm
Description: Friday mornings (8:30 – noon) from January 27th to May 4th, 2012 (plus 2 Saturdays 2/11 and 3/17), an intensive training in horticulture, focusing on growing fruits and vegetables. The purpose of the Master Gardener program is to provide horticultural training to prepare you to do gardening-related volunteer work in the local community. After completing the training, you are expected to volunteer at least 40 hours within one year on an already established project. Deadline to apply is Wednesday January 4th, 2012. Sliding scale course fee, some scholarships available. Event: 2012 Maine Grain Workshop – Commercial Production for Food and Feed
When: Fri, Feb 17 9:00 am – 4:00 pm
Description: Come hear what’s going on with food and organic feed-grade markets and how to produce quality grains. A panel of grain buyers will discuss what they’re looking for. Farmer and co-owner of Farmer Ground Flour, Thor Oechsner, will talk about growing, handling, and processing food and feed grains. Elizabeth Dyck, Organic Growers’ Research and Information-Sharing Network, will share her insights from working with farmers in New York and Pennsylvania to supply grains to local markets. Jake Dyer, of UMaine and Qualey Farms, will tell how he’s reduced feed costs for the UMaine dairy herd by growing his own barley. Alice Percy, Treble Ridge Farm, will talk about small scale production of feed and food grains.

Event: School Garden 101 Class
When: Tue, Feb 28 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm
Description: This course is for teachers, cooks, after-school staff, parents, community volunteers, and Master Gardener Volunteers who will tie garden learning to the classroom and cafeteria and want to start or maintain a school garden. Topics to be covered include: composting, soils, garden planning & design, seed starting, care of seedlings, seed-saving, pollinators, native plants, and orchards for school gardens. Experiential lessons, curricular connections, and fundraising ideas will also be explored. Guest speakers Mark Hutchinson, Caragh Fitzgerald, Neil Lash, Liz Stanley, and Rebecca Jacobs will join Extension Educator Ellie Libby to provide participants with a wealth of ideas and inspiration for the upcoming growing season.

Description: Foot rot in sheep and goats is a contagious and devastating disease
that has put producers all over the world out of business. The
instructors are University of Maryland Extension small ruminant
