Farmers can harvest hay more quickly in large round bales, which can be rebaled later into more marketable, smaller, square bales for the equine and small livestock market. It is estimated that there are about 38,000 horses in the state of Maine. Each needs about 1/2 bale of hay per day when not on pasture.
