Maine Horticulture Apprentice Training

Maine Horticulture Apprentice Training is closing a critical workforce gap by pairing industry-aligned coursework with a micro-credential and mentored experience. Built from the Master Gardener Volunteer program and employer input, the curriculum delivers 18 weeks of virtual, self-paced training plus a 200-hour apprenticeship validating skills and career readiness across Maine’s green industry.

Demand is strong: a 2022 survey by Extension, Maine Department of Conservation and the Maine Landscape and Nursery Association found 81% of employers value certification training. Since launch, 90 people have enrolled; in 2024 alone, 44 participated. To date, 81 have earned Level 1 badges, 53 have earned Level 2, and 25 have completed the full apprenticeship. Thirty-seven businesses have hosted apprentices.

The program expands access by reaching high school students and incarcerated learners—audiences often missed by traditional training. Graduates use the micro-credential for jobs and college programs, strengthening Maine’s green workforce and advancing statewide opportunity.
