Please join us for a Winter Tracking Workshop

Where: Lake St. George State Park, in Liberty Maine
Who Can Attend: Everyone is Welcome!

What to Bring: A bag lunch, binoculars if you have them, snowshoes * let us know if you don’t have access to snowshoes, we may have a few loaner pairs on first come, first serve basis
Planned Activities:
9:30-10 am — Welcome session, introductions, and light refreshments
10-11:30 am – Nature walk and winter track ID featuring MDIFW wildlife biologists
11:30-noon – Warm-up near the fire and explore skins, skulls, and tracks of Maine’s wildlife
12-12:30 pm – Wrap-up and information session about the Maine WHEP program.

WHEP is a 4-H based hands-on environmental education program dedicated to teaching wildlife and fisheries habitat management to youth (ages 8-19) and provides participants an opportunity to test their wildlife and habitat knowledge in a friendly competitive nature.
Students compete in 4 areas:
Wildlife Challenge: Testing knowledge of wildlife species identification, basic life history, and habitat needs.
Wildlife Management Practices: Applying knowledge of wildlife’s habitat needs to make recommendations of on-site wildlife management practices.
Written Management Plan: Youth are given a scenario to compile habitat knowledge, appropriate management practices to formalize a management plan for a specific property.
Oral Reasons: Youth will explain the rationale for recommendations in their written plan to the State Planning Committee.
