Content Standards and AI Use
University of Maine Cooperative Extension is committed to providing practical, research-based information that people can use and trust. UMaine Extension faculty and staff are fully responsible for the accuracy, quality and usefulness of the information we publish.
We may use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support parts of our work, including brainstorming, organizing information, developing early drafts, editing and improving readability or accessibility. These tools may assist our work, but they do not replace subject-matter expertise, careful evaluation of sources, professional judgment or human responsibility.
Our standards for public-facing information do not change based on the tools used to develop it. Before publication, content is reviewed and approved by the appropriate UMaine Extension faculty or staff. Factual claims and sources are checked, and the information is evaluated for accuracy, relevance and consistency with the best available research and evidence.
When generative AI plays a significant role in creating or shaping public-facing content, we provide a disclosure near the affected content. The disclosure explains how AI was used and describes the human review or verification that followed. Minor uses, such as assistance with spelling, grammar, formatting or routine editing, generally do not receive a separate disclosure.
AI-powered tools that interact directly with the public are subject to additional review, testing and monitoring appropriate to their purpose and potential risks. We follow University of Maine System requirements and UMaine Extension guidance for privacy, confidentiality, data protection and responsible AI use.
Questions about this statement or a specific use of AI may be directed to extension.communications@maine.edu.
