Introduction to Project Feeder Watch

Note: This is a 10-session program meeting Nov. 2, 2026, through April 12, 2027. One registration covers the complete series. Participants must register before the program begins and cannot join after the first session.

Be a citizen scientist for backyard birds this winter in this 10-session online 4-H series for Maine youth ages 10-14. Participants will learn to identify common backyard birds, explore their beaks, diets and habitats and practice observation and documentation skills while watching birds at a feeder.

Participants need regular access to a bird feeder and will spend short periods of 5-15 minutes observing between sessions. A home feeder used for the project should remain filled throughout the series. Youth may also observe a feeder at a neighbor’s home, library or another location. No previous bird identification experience is required.

Participants are expected to attend all 10 sessions. Younger siblings may sit in on sessions with adult or caregiver supervision, but supply packets are mailed only to registered participants. A parent or caregiver is expected to participate in one session to learn about additional citizen science and ornithology resources.

Registration is free and required by 11 p.m. Oct. 19. Enrollment is limited to 10 participants, with a waitlist available after capacity is reached. Donations are appreciated.

Families may also choose to register separately with Project Feeder Watch and submit their observations. The organizer estimates this optional registration at approximately $20. It is not required for participation in the 4-H series.
