Artificial intelligence is part of everyday life, but how does it work? In this six-part online 4-H series, youth will explore basic machine learning concepts through hands-on activities using Code.org. Participants will practice making predictions, training simple AI models and building beginner computer science skills.
The series is designed primarily for youth ages 9 to 12, though teens are welcome. Youth ages 9-18 may participate, and no prior experience is required. Participants need access to a computer or tablet and must create a Code.org account. Registration covers all six sessions, and participants are expected to attend each week.
Sessions will be held from Nov. 9 through Dec. 14:
- Session 1: Monday, Nov. 9, 6 to 7:15 p.m., online via Zoom
- Session 2: Monday, Nov. 16, 6 to 7:15 p.m., online via Zoom
- Session 3: Monday, Nov. 23, 6 to 7:15 p.m., online via Zoom
- Session 4: Monday, Nov. 30, 6 to 7:15 p.m., online via Zoom
- Session 5: Monday, Dec. 7, 6 to 7:15 p.m., online via Zoom
- Session 6: Monday, Dec. 14, 6 to 7:15 p.m., online via Zoom
The program is free, and donations are welcome. Registration closes Nov. 1. Space is limited to eight participants, with a waitlist available after capacity is reached.
The program is also seeking an adult or teen volunteer co-leader who is comfortable with Zoom and has basic computer science skills. Contact Sarah Sparks at sarah.sparks@maine.edu for more information about volunteering.
