There are some plants that can be winter sown in the milk jugs in Maine. There is a bulletin from the University of Minnesota that can give you the basics and their climate is very similar to ours. Only certain varieties of seeds sow well this way, the research is ongoing as to which varieties do best so look for blogs and groups that focus on winter sowing.
