Technically, the fountain grasses do not appear on the Maine Do Not Sell list, which is our database of officially recognized invasives. That said, it is considered invasive in a few other states, and just because a plant doesn’t appear on Maine’s list doesn’t mean it can’t be invasive, just that it hasn’t met the statutory criteria. As climate change progresses, I suspect there may be problems with it in the future, but it’s difficult to gauge when. It’s *probably* ok to plant for now, but I often gently dissuade folks from doing so unless their heart is set on it. A native specimen grass like switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) or fern like cinnamon fern (Osmunda cinnamomea) might be a better alternative that would fill a similar design niche.

I hope that helps you decide.
