Sweet Haven Harvest for Hunger, Seal Cove
Volunteers have the opportunity to practice all aspects of vegetable production. We weekly deliver produce that is available to several limited income housing sites on Mount Desert Island. Volunteers have a great sense of pride in being able to help their neighbors.
Volunteers will practice soil preparation for planting, transplanting seedlings, direct seeding, and crop maintenance and harvesting. You will learn how to grow vegetables in field gardens, raised garden beds, hoop house beds, and “Earth Boxes” (planters). You will learn to use organic pest control and soil management methods
We meet for 25 weeks each growing season, from mid-May until the end of October. There are 3 work sessions per week, three hours each. Tuesday and Thursday morning are devoted to harvesting and preparing produce for noon time delivery. Thursday afternoons are devoted to garden maintenance activities, i.e., weeding, planting, watering and the like. Work sessions can be changed to accommodate volunteers’ work schedules as needed. This a commitment of 75 hours per season.
