Litchfield 4-H Horse Show Classes

  1. Senior 4-H Fitting and Showmanship: All 4-H’ers ages 14 to 18 must enter this class to be eligible to participate in any other classes. English horses to be shown in a bridle, Western horses in a halter. Entries are led into the ring and posed, then are judged individually, standing and at a walk and trot. To be judged 40% on Appearance of Animal (condition, grooming, trimming & braiding, and tack), 10% on Appearance of Exhibitor, and 50% on Showing of Animal in the Ring (leading, posing, showing the animal to best advantage, and poise, alertness, and attitude.
  1. Intermediate 4-H Fitting and Showmanship: (See class 1 for details.) All 4-H’ers ages 12 to 13 must enter this class to be eligible to participate in any other classes.
  1. Junior 4-H Fitting and Showmanship: (See class 1 for details.) All 4-H’ers ages 9 to 11 must enter this class to be eligible to participate in any other classes.
  1. Judging Class: This is a student judging class. You will judge a class (halter) and compare your results to the official judge’s results. Danish ribbons awarded. Premiums for the first six places.
  1. Walk Trot Equitation: Open to all riders, ages 9 to 18 including green horse/green rider. Rider not eligible for any class where canter or lope is required. An adult or a senior 4-H Member must be available for each rider and may be asked to stay with the horse or to lead the horse, at the discretion of the judge or the rider’s 4-H leader. To be judged on the rider’s form, security of seat, and skill in control of the horse at a walk and at a trot or jog.
  1. Walk Trot Pleasure: Open to all riders, ages 9 to 18, including green horse/green rider, English or Western. Rider not eligible for any class where canter or lope is required- no gait faster than a trot. An adult or a senior 4-H Member must be available for each rider and may be asked to stay with the horse or to lead the horse, at the discretion of the judge or the rider’s 4-H leader. To be judged on the horse’s performance, manners, suitability as a child’s mount, and apparent ability to give a pleasurable ride at a walk and at a trot or jog. May be asked to back.
  1. Walk Trot Single Pole: (No gait faster than a trot.) Must have a Western saddle. Rider not eligible for any class where canter/lope is required.
  1. Walk Trot Egg-on-a-Spoon: Each rider carries an egg on a spoon. The class may be asked to walk, trot or jog, canter or lope, reverse directions, or perform other maneuvers. Riders are eliminated as they drop their eggs until only one rider remains.
  1. Senior English Equitation: Ribbons and trophies. Open to riders, ages 14 to 18. To be judged on the rider’s form, security of seat, and skill in control of the horse at a walk, trot, and canter.
  2. Intermediate English Equitation: Ribbons and trophies. Open to riders, ages 12 to 13. To be judged on the rider’s form, security, and skill in control of the horse at a walk, trot, and canter.
  3. Junior English Equitation: Ribbons and trophies. Open to riders, ages 9 to 11. To be judged on the rider’s form, security of seat, and skill in control of the horse at a walk, trot, and canter. A short pattern may be included.
  4. English Pleasure: Open to all riders, ages 9 to 18. To be judged on the horse’s or pony’s performance, manners, and apparent ability to give a pleasurable ride at a walk, trot, and canter. Will be asked to back.
  5. Senior Western Equitation: Ribbons and trophies. Open to riders, ages 14 to 18. To be judged on the rider’s form, security of seat, and skill in control of the horse at a walk, jog, and lope.
  1. Intermediate Western Equitation: Ribbons and trophies. Open to riders, ages 12 to 13. To be judged on the rider’s form, security of seat and skill in control of the horse at a walk, jog, and lope.
  1. Junior Western Equitation: Ribbons and trophies. Open to riders, ages 9 to 11. To be judged on the rider’s form, security of seat, and skill in control of the horse at a walk, jog, and lope.
  2. Western Pleasure: Open to all riders, ages 9 to 18. To be judged on the horse’s performance, manners and apparent ability to give a pleasurable ride at a walk, jog, and lope. Will be asked to back.

  5. Egg-on-a-Spoon: Open to riders, ages 9 to 18. Not open to Walk Trot participants. Each rider carries an egg on a spoon. The class may be asked to walk, trot or jog, canter or lope, reverse directions, or perform other maneuvers. Riders are eliminated as they drop their eggs until only one rider remains.
  6. Break N Out: Open to riders, ages 9 to 18. Not open to Walk Trot participants. Riders enter the ring in pairs. Each pair is given a strip of paper to hold between them. The class may be asked to walk, trot or jog, canter or lope, reverse directions, back up, or perform other maneuvers. Riders are eliminated as they tear or lose hold of their paper until only one pair of riders remain. Riders may not hold hands or link fingers.
