4-H Learning Centers Connect Youth to the Outdoors

UMaine Extension 4-H Camp and Learning Centers provide year-round nature-based programs for youth ages 4-17, fostering positive social and emotional learning experiences. Using evidence-based practices, these experiences develop a sense of place, belonging, and confidence outdoors, and offer educational pathways to post-secondary success in Maine’s rural areas. Programs include day and residential camps, Outdoor School, in-school enrichment, adult workshops, and virtual components for accessibility. Our Learning Centers attract over 2,500 youth each summer and provide school programming for over 6,000 students from 60+ Maine schools. In 2024, the 4-H Camp and Learning Centers:

  • Supported Telstar Freshman Academy with daily, yearlong experiential learning.
  • Continued the NorthStar Youth 4-H Mentoring program, combining in-person and virtual contact.
