4-H Ocean Xplorers Exposing Youth to Ocean Sciences Career Pathways

The 4-H Ocean Xplorers program, offered by UMaine Extension and the Belfast Free Library, introduced over 70 mid-coast Maine youth to marine-related career opportunities through hands-on activities. This initiative aims to address labor shortages and foster environmental stewardship by sparking interest in ocean sciences and providing local career pathways. Monthly activities included designing aquaponics systems, exploring fish anatomy, meeting marine creatures, discovering Maine seaweed, researching the color of the sea, and learning about marine mammals. Participants met researchers from Bigelow Laboratory, UMaine doctorate students, grad students, and undergrads, educators from Belfast Area High School, and Extension staff. Many participants have maintained connections to the County Extension 4-H program and continue to participate in 4-H activities.
