UMaine Extension offers workshop on maintaining soil health in gardens
Falmouth, Maine — University of Maine Cooperative Extension will host a workshop on garden soil health on Tuesday, September 15 from 5–6:30 p.m. at the UMaine Gardens at Tidewater Farm, 200 Presumpscot Point Road in Falmouth.
UMaine Extension Horticulture Professional Rebecca Long will lead an engaging workshop on the foundation of a successful garden: healthy soil. Participants will learn how the physical, chemical, and biological properties of soil work together to help gardeners grow healthier, more productive plants.
In this workshop, attendees will explore the role of soil organic matter and the soil food web, learn how to assess the health of garden soil, and discover how to use soil test results to guide management decisions. Additional topics include practical techniques for building and protecting soil health, from improving soil structure and organic matter to supporting the organisms that help soil function. Participants will gain practical knowledge and strategies to better understand, manage, and improve garden soil.
The registration fee is $15 and advance registration is required. More information and registration are available on the Soil Health workshop webpage. For more information or to request a reasonable accommodation, contact Pamela Hargest at pamela.hargest@maine.edu or 207.949.4524.
