Event Series Event Series: Archaeology: Past, Present, and Future

Archaeology: Past, Present, and Future

June 30, 2021 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Archaeological excavation of Ireland Peat Bog

This is a part of the 2021 4-H Summer Learning Series.

In this series of three workshops, we will learn about how archaeologists study the past and how the objects that we make and use today will be studied by future archaeologists. In the first workshop, we will learn about artifacts, and how what an object is made of can determine how well it will stay preserved in the ground for archaeologists to find. In the second workshop, we will learn about archaeological sites and how they are mapped. Participants will have the opportunity to use what they learned in the first and second workshops to create their own site plans. In the final workshop, we will use the information we learned in the first two workshops to discuss the concept of ‘context’ and its importance when interpreting the past. Participants will have activities/assignments to complete on their own time, and can then share and discuss at each workshop. Registration Deadline: June 16.

Open to Maine youth ages 11 & up
