OPEN HOUSE CELEBRATION

The University of Maine Cooperative Extension Aroostook County, Houlton office, has recently moved to the Houlton Higher Education Center at 18 Military Street. We are excited about this new change, joining the community of UMPI, UMA, NMCC, and Houlton and Hodgdon Adult Education. We would love to have you join us for an Open House Celebration with a ribbon cutting and light refreshments.

Paca Pals – fun picture from the fair.
This is Solomon (and Bernadette F) competing. Solomon was completing his obstacle course, but the rest of the alpacas there wanted to join the fun. Herd mentality, and kind of a party-animal thing. 🙂 They weren’t invited, but I thought it was cute!
We want to wish the Aroostook County girls all the best as they participate at Eastern States in September.

4-H & Tractor Supply Co.:
Tractor Supply stores in communities across the country have long supported 4-H clubs, and now, Tractor Supply Co. has entered into an official partnership with the National 4-H Council as your source for 4-H project supplies.
100% of funds raised benefit 4-H. 90% fund State level scholarships to 4-H camps and leadership experiences and 10% supports National 4-H Council for administration. Tractor Supply Company guarantees a minimum donation of $200,000 per Paper Clover Campaign (or $400,000 a year).
Paper Clover
Each Spring and Fall, Tractor Supply will help raise money for 4-H programs with the Paper Clover Campaign, a national in-store fundraiser that benefits 4-H programming.

If you are an Aroostook County 4-H member or club who would like to be featured in one of our upcoming newsletters please reach out to Elizabeth Carroll, your Aroostook County 4-H Community Outreach Assistant. She will be showcasing some 4-H members in our upcoming newsletters.
Pssst! This is an EXCELLENT opportunity to have a write-up about your 4-H adventures and your upcoming goals for your portfolio or brag book! Feel free to reach out via Facebook, email, or phone.
Interviews will be coordinated in whichever way is most convenient for 4-H members and family. Our Community Outreach Assistant can do a brief interview over the phone or we can even do a full write-up and take photos with 4-H Group members at a meeting for a Club Showcase! The options are endless and offer a wonderful opportunity for 4-H members to be featured on the University of Maine Cooperative Extension Newsletter.

The weather is cooling off in Aroostook County, Maine which brings us closer and closer to harvest time. For those that love the warmth of summer we will be bringing you a wonderful indoor activity that evokes pleasant vibes, to keep you in that summer mindset; K-I-N-E-T-I-C SAND!
Yess!!
You can thank us all here at Cooperative Extension later for not delivering a Slime recipe to your inbox, so be sure to check out this awesome recipe for Kinetic Sand and bring warm summer days at the beach home, WITHOUT the mess. It’s simple and other than the sand, you will probably have everything you need to create this exciting kid favorite.
(General disclaimer: We are using the term ‘recipe’ loosely, do NOT eat your kinetic sand, it isn’t tasty and it isn’t good for you, even if you use green sand.)
Kinetic Sand Materials needed:
2 cups hobby/craft sand
1 TBSP Cornstarch
1 tsp dish soap
Water (start with ¼ cup and add as needed)
2 containers – one for mixing water with dish soap, one for mixing and storing sand.
Directions:
In a container (preferably what you will be using to store finished product in) pour in two cups of craft sand. Check your local craft store, you might just find a green sand, just right for our 4-H members!
Next, add in cornstarch and mix.
Then, measure out 1 teaspoon of dish soap and pour it into a separate container.
Add ¼ cup of water to the dish soap and stir until bubbles begin to form.
Slowly add the water and soap mixture to your dry ingredients. Mix well.
If your mixture is dry, try adding a bit more water and stir. Continue adding water and stirring until the desired consistency is reached.

1. Cumberland Fair 4-H Dog and Rabbit Shows Open to All Maine 4-Her’s
The Cumberland Fair 4-H Dog Show will be held Friday, September 27, 3:30pm at the Cumberland
Fairgrounds, 197 Blanchard Rd, Cumberland, Maine 04062 (Directions). This show is open to all Maine 4-H
members between the ages of 9 to 18, enrolled in the 4-H Dog Project as of April 1, regardless of prior show
experience. Showmanship (Novice through Advanced) and Obedience (Pre-Novice though Graduate Novice)
are the primary award-winning classes. There will also be a fun, non-competitive obstacle class. All classes are
judged using the Danish System and all award winning classes come with a ribbon and premium.
The Cumberland Fair 4-H Rabbit Show will be held Saturday, September 28, 9:00am at the Cumberland
Fairgrounds. This show is open to all Maine 4-H members between the ages of 5 to 18, enrolled in the 4-H
Rabbit Project as of April 1, regardless of prior show experience. Showmanship classes for Cloverbuds
(demonstration only), Juniors, Intermediates, and Seniors will be offered.
