What should I do to prepare my raised bed garden for planting?

Question:

I have a raised garden bed that I have used for two years so far. I was wondering what I should do to prepare it for this year’s planting? Do I need to change the soil or fortify it?

I encourage you to submit a sample to our lab in Orono for soil testing. You can request a soil test kit to be mailed directly to you on our website, Maine Soil Request. If you’ve never taken a sample before, this video will explain how to take and send in a sample. You’ll receive specific recommendations for amending your soil after it’s been tested. If you have any questions about the results, please contact your local Extension office and we can walk you through the recommendations.
