What are some shrubs that will work well in a hedgerow?
Question:
I’ve been thinking about growing a hedgerow similar to those in England. I’m looking for shrubs and trees that would work well in our climate and some direction in planting.

Great idea! First you will have to consider the site conditions (sun/shade, soil drainage and quality, space requirements), as you will want to select plants that will naturally thrive in your particular landscape. I think you would find the following resources useful and a great place to start:
- Native Hedges & Hedgerows- Wild Seed Project – reinforcing why you have a great idea and suggesting native plants depending on your site.
- Native Plant Finder, Maine Audubon – great resource to know about, and you can search by sunlight, height, bloom time and ecological benefit
- Plants for the Maine Landscape – Multiple plant lists and you can scroll down for plant lists by site type (e.g. Plants for dry soil and full sun, ect.)
- Hedgerows for the Home Garden – Penn State – more info!
