Is seaweed good to put in/on your vegetable garden? Should it be rinsed, dried, or otherwise treated to reduce the salt on it before putting it in the vegetable bed?

I will refer you to an article written by my UMaine colleague, Liz Stanley, for the Maine Home Garden News newsletter (a great resource for Maine gardeners–there is a link to subscribe on the page): Seaweed in the Garden. As mentioned in the piece, the most convenient seaweed has already been rinsed by rainfall, but if not, giving it a good wash to remove excess salt is an excellent idea.
