Troy Howard Middle School Garden

Address: 173 Lincolnville Avenue, Belfast, Maine

This school garden in Belfast has been an integral part of the Troy Howard Middle School for over 20 years. Students integrate their classroom learning with the stewardship of this amazing garden. They grow flowers, herbs, vegetables, and seed crops on a ? of an acre garden. Students then harvest, clean, and pack produce that is sold to the RSU 71 school district and is distributed to all schools throughout the district, historically the garden program has also grown greens year-round that have been sold to the Belfast co-op. Students steward a robust collection of heirloom seeds, selling seed at the co-op and through Fedco, host a seedling sale in the spring, and cook food from the garden in an outdoor pizza oven (as well as indoors throughout the seasons). Other seasonal projects include packing and preparing entries for the Common Ground Fair, picking apples and pears from the school orchard and pressing cider, tapping maple trees from the school grounds and boiling maple syrup, and other various garden related art and construction projects. During the summer months the Garden Coordinator runs a free camp program which is a great opportunity for getting involved. Volunteers can reach out to Chantal Brouillard to learn more about the possibility of volunteering at this site.
