Anytime Science and Craft

Amazing Archeological Artifacts
Session 1 (9:15 – 10:30 am)
Presenter: Eyan Fennelly, UMaine Geology Graduate
Ages: 9-18, Maximum 8 Youth
Welcome to the dig site! We need your help to uncover and piece together a buried artifact. In this workshop, youth will learn about the tools and methods archaeologists use in the field to discover ancient artifacts from around the world. We wonder what they’ll piece together from this dig site!
Animal Charades
Session 3 (1:00 – 1:50 pm)
Presenter: Tess Hureau, 4-H Staff
Ages: 5-8, Maximum 10 Youth
Have you ever wondered how an animal communicates? Through an interactive charades game, youth explore different forms of animal communication (visual, auditory, chemical, tactile) and learn the importance of clear and effective communication in the animal (and human!) world.
Archery
Session 1 (9:15 – 10:30 am), Session 2 (10:45 – 12:00 pm)
Presenters: Norwood Ames & Frank Butler, 4-H Club Leaders of the Lock, Stock, and Barrel 4-H Club
Ages: 9-18, Maximum 10 Youth
This introductory workshop will teach basic archery techniques and safety. Youth must be aged 9 by December 31st of 2025 to participate in this program.
Barnyard Olympics
Session 1 (9:15 – 10:30 am)
Presenter: Lee Sargent and Terry Swazey, 4-H Leaders
Ages 9-18, Maximum 15 Youth
Get ready to move and show us your farming skills through a series of barnyard trials. Our events are top secret, but be ready for any task a farmer may need to accomplish!
Basic First Aid
Session 4 (10:45 – 12:00 pm)
Presenter: Dianna Donahue Grindle and Debra Donahue, 4-H Volunteer and Retired Trauma Nurse
Any Age, Maximum 15 Youth
It’s always good to practice your basic first aid skills for around the home and barn. In this workshop, youth will learn which common items they can use when they don’t have a first-aid kit handy. After, they’ll put their skills to the test while under the pressure of a first aid relay race!
Beautiful Book Binding
Session 2 (10:45 – 12:00 pm)
Presenter: Tess Hureau, 4-H Staff
Ages: 9-18, Maximum 10 Youth
In this workshop, youth will learn how to bind their own small notebook. Participants will be able to customize their book with different types of paper and decorate their book covers. Let’s get creating!
Escape the Exhibit Hall
Session 2 (10:45 – 12:00 pm)
Presenter: Andrea and Jim Mahoney, 4-H Staff and 4-H Volunteer
Ages 9-18, Maximum 6 Youth
You stayed late in the Exhibit Hall to put the finishing touches on your photography and woodworking projects, but the Blue Hill Fairground spirits have other plans. To earn your exit, you must prove your ‘Head, Heart, Hands, and Health’ by solving a series of skill-based challenges. The clock is ticking, the lights are flickering, and the Midway is calling—can you ‘Make the Best Better’ and find your way out?
Exploring Poultry with 4-H
Session 4 (2:00 – 2:50 pm)
Presenter: Sadee Mehuren, 4-H Staff
Any Age, Maximum 15 Youth
Join us for a hands-on 4-H Poultry Workshop where youth will learn the basics of poultry housing and daily care in a fun and creative way! Participants will explore what chickens and other poultry need to stay healthy, safe, and productive. Using LEGOs, youth will design and build their ideal poultry environment while applying what they learn about proper poultry management. Perfect for beginners and experienced 4-H members alike, this workshop will help participants better understand how to create a safe and comfortable home for poultry.
Farm Fresh Prints
Session 4 (2:00 – 2:50 pm)
Presenter: Carla Scocchi, 4-H Staff
Ages: 5-8, Maximum 10 Youth
Turn fruits and vegetables into art! In this fun workshop, youth will use cut fruits and veggies as natural stamps to create colorful printed projects like kitchen towels or decorative flags to take home. Apples, pears, celery, peppers, carrots, and more can make surprising patterns and beautiful designs when paired with fabric paint and a little creativity. As we create, we’ll also explore different types of fruits and vegetables, noticing their shapes, textures, seeds, and patterns, and learning a little about how food grows. Participants will discover how everyday produce can become a unique art tool while exploring color, pattern, printmaking, and nature-based creativity.
Fuzzy Caterpillar Friends
Session 1 (9:15 – 10:30 am)
Presenter: Carla Scocchi, 4-H Staff
Ages: 5-18, Maximum 15 youth
Get ready for a colorful felting adventure! In this hands-on workshop, youth will create their very own soft and squishy caterpillar friend using bright wool, warm water, and a little bit of soap. We’ll explore the magic of wet felting as we roll, shape, and transform fluffy wool into cheerful caterpillars full of personality. Perfect for younger youth and beginners, this workshop builds fine motor skills, creativity, and confidence – plus everyone gets to take home their new fuzzy friend! Parents are encouraged to join younger participants.
Make Your Own Mossy
Session 2 (10:45 – 12:00)
Presenter: Leah McCluskey, 4-H Staff
Ages: 5-8, Maximum 12 Youth
Join Leah for a reading of the book Mossy by Jan Brett and follow the life of a young turtle on a journey away from home. After the story, youth will have a chance to make their own Mossy by going on a nature walk to collect items from their own journey through the fairgrounds!
Needle Felting Studio
Session 3 (1:00 – 1:50 pm)
Presenter: Carla Scocchi, 4-H Staff
Any Age, Maximum 10 Youth
Discover the art of needle felting and turn soft wool into something amazing! In this hands-on workshop, youth will learn the basics of sculpting with wool using special felting needles to create small 3D projects or try “painting with wool” by using colorful fibers to create flat felted artwork and pictures. We’ll have several beginner-friendly project ideas to choose from, or participants can bring their own creative ideas to life. This workshop encourages patience, creativity, and imagination while building fine motor skills and confidence. Great for beginners and experienced crafters alike! Younger participants must have an adult present to help them.
Scientific Illustration
Session 3 (1:00 – 1:50 pm)
Presenter: Alyssa Marini, UMaine Graduate Student
Ages 9-18, Maximum 10 Youth
Have you ever been curious about scientific illustration? This is a wonderful opportunity to collaborate with a talented scientific illustrator and discover useful tips and tricks for creating your own scientific drawings. Alyssa Marini, a PhD student at the University of Maine, runs a business specializing in detailed scientific illustrations of insects, marine animals, and more! Team Building 101
Session 3 (1:00 – 1:50 pm)
Presenter: Leah McCluskey, 4-H Staff
All Ages, Maximum 12 Youth
Put your teamwork skills to the test in this interactive team-building workshop. Join your other 4-H friends in several challenges where you’ll need to showcase your communication skills, ability to be flexible around others’ needs, and willingness to try something new!
Who Can Build a Better Nest
Session 4 (2:00 – 2:50 pm)
Presenter: Leah McCluskey, 4-H Staff
Ages: 9-18, Maximum 10 Youth
Nature is full of amazing engineers – from beaver dams to beehives, we have some serious builders in our midst. In this workshop, youth will be put to the test to engineer a bird nest of their own. This nest must stick together, withstand high winds and other weather events, and most importantly, cradle an egg! Let’s see who’s up for the challenge!
