Eat Well Volunteer Outreach in Food Pantries

Eat Well Volunteers conduct a food lesson
Eat Well Volunteers Nicole Gurreri and Elizabeth Byard conduct a food lesson at Loaves & Fishes food pantry.

To participate in this project, you must first take a supplemental 12 hour Eat Well Volunteer training in June.  The training covers basic nutrition, food preparation, food preservation, food safety, and poverty awareness.  Once trained, you will conduct weekly hands-on lessons in a food pantry from July through mid-November while distributing fresh produce.  You will teach food pantry clients simple ways to use fruits and vegetables when preparing meals, and ways to safely preserve fresh produce for future use.  You will demonstrate healthy cooking techniques such as sautéing, steaming and roasting, offer taste tests, and distribute healthy, simple recipes along with vegetables and fruits.  We could use 3-4 new MGVs for this project in addition to those who return from past years.  We are currently offering this program in food pantries in Bucksport, Ellsworth, and Mariaville.
