Seminar note: “Understanding Forest Vulnerability to Climate Change”

On April 10th, Maria Janowiak gave a seminar titled “Understanding Forest Vulnerability to Climate Change” at the University of Maine. Maria is the Deputy Director of the Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science (NIAC), a program of the U.S. Forest Service. In her presentation, Maria provided a summary of a vulnerability assessment that NIAC recently published that focused on New England forests. The assessment examined how forest ecosystems might respond to a range of future climate scenarios and evaluated where ecosystems were vulnerable to these changes. Maria specifically mentioned the importance of phenology and how phenological observations provide a way of capturing slow changes that occur over a wide geographic range.
