Community Central Portland Visits Boston
Last week, a group of teen leaders from Portland traveled to Boston for a day of training and celebrating the upcoming Community Central & Summer of Science programming.
On the ride down to Boston, these young leaders completed a reflection activity that looks at becoming a STEM Superstar. Based on an article by the National AfterSchool Association’s STEM Specialist Andy Allan teens thought about how they have utilized these ten tips or how they can use them in their future work with 4-H youth. The article, 10 Tips: Become a STEM Superstar can be found on the National After School Association website.
The first stop in the city was a tour around Harvard University, offering the opportunity to see what college life is like in an urban setting. At Harvard Science Center, the group stopped to see Mark I, a general purpose electro-mechanical computer that was used in the war effort during the last part of World War II.
After lunch on campus the group watched the movie Galapagos 3D: Nature’s Wonderland (scroll to the listing at the bottom of the page) at the New England Aquarium’s IMAX theater and walked the Freedom Trail, including seeing Paul Revere’s house, back to the station to catch the train home.
Planning is underway for summer sessions and more teen leader trainings, exciting things will be happening across Portland and Lewiston!
