The Long Island Community Garden was started in 2006. They have a large plot which is planted for the Evergreen United Methodist Church food pantry every year. This year we harvested around 100 pounds of potatoes. Other years we have planted squash, carrots and green beans. As our resident Master Gardener, Penny Murley has taken on this garden as her primary community service project, along with the help of a committee of four. They organize an annual spring clean-up of the perennial bed, hold an annual perennial sale( this year they were able to purchase a garden shed this year from the proceeds). They host a bi-annual garden tour of the island, a summer garden party each year and a harvest supper every November.

In addition, they are in charge of the municipal planters along the waterfront, (there are fourteen of them) plus the nine planters at the town office and library. In the past we have participated in the Pink Tulip Cancer Project, and this year we participated in the Project Hope Yellow Tulip Project. The 32 beds are always rented and there is always a waiting list. The look upcoming season is the 14 for the Long Island Community Garden.  Project Coordinator: Penny Murley.
