Should asparagus plants be cut back in the fall?

Question:

Should asparagus plants be cut back in the fall after they’ve turned yellow? I read that they should be cut just under the top of the soil, but wanted to confirm this information.

Lynne M. Holland, Horticulture and Social Media Professional

Once the asparagus tops have yellowed their work is done for the year. Cutting them back is a good idea so that any disease or insect issues can be removed from the bed. There is no need to cut below the soil line. See publication #2071, Growing Asparagus in Maine. That should answer any other questions you might have. If not, please reach out to your county office. Or the Home Horticulture Professional, Kate Garland will be glad to assist you.
