Asparagus crowns should be planted in a pre-dug furrow and covered with light, sandy (and therefore well-draining) soil so that water doesn’t accumulate at the roots and shoots can easily penetrate the surface. If the soil below the furrow is equally light and porous, the crowns can be buried 6-8″ deep; if not, cheat them up to about 4″ below the surface to make sure the root structure doesn’t get compacted.
