Anytime Science & Craft
All Day Saturday
All Ages Welcome
Drop by the “Anytime Science and Craft” table at any point throughout the day, between workshops or during your downtime. 

Amazing Animal Adaptations
Session 1 (9:15 – 10:30 am)
Presenter: Meg Begley, 4-H Staff
Ages: 5-8, Maximum 15 Youth
Students will investigate animals in Maine and learn about their adaptations. Youth will take part in mini experiments, study pelts, investigate teeth types, and end their exploration with a craft.

Archery
Session 1 (9:15 – 10:30 am), Session 2 (10:45 – 12:00 pm)
Presenters: Norwood Ames & Chris Kravitt, 4-H Club Leaders of the Lock, Stock, and Barrel 4-H Club
Ages: 9-18, Maximum 10 Youth

This introductory workshop will teach basic Archery techniques and safety.

Bacteria Detectives
Session 3 (1:00 – 1:50 pm)
Presenter: Dani Rodriguez, Shaw Institute Education and Outreach Manager
Ages: 9-18, Maximum 16 Youth

The Shaw Institute has been conducting coastal monitoring for over 15 years, testing popular beach sites around the Blue Hill Peninsula for, fecal bacteria, and other sources of pollution. Participants will learn about the water cycle and watershed pollution, how this affects them, and what they can do to positively affect change.

Barnyard Olympics
Session 2 (10:45 – 12:00 pm)
Presenter: Lee Sargent, 4-H Leader
Ages 5-13, Maximum 12 Youth
Get ready to move and show us your farming skills through a series of barnyard trials. Our events are top secret, but be ready for any task a farmer may need to accomplish!

Blizzards in June
Session 4 (2:00 – 2:50 pm)
Presenter: Leah McCluskey, 4-H Staff
Any Age, Maximum 10 Youth

Get ready to shake things up in our hands-on DIY Ice Cream Workshop! You’ll learn how to make delicious homemade ice cream using simple ingredients and an interactive shaking method—no fancy equipment needed, though we may try some out! Perfect for all ages, this tasty activity is a great way to enjoy a sweet treat while discovering the science behind freezing and flavoring your own creations.

Catching Light: A Suncatcher Craft
Session 3 (1:00 – 1:50 pm)

Join us for a fun and colorful workshop where you’ll create your very own suncatcher using vibrant beads and simple materials. Let your creativity shine as you design a piece that sparkles in the sunlight and brightens any space. This hands-on activity is perfect for all ages and skill levels!

Celebrate the Seasons: Changing Trees
Session 3 (1:00 – 1:50 pm)
Presenter: Andrea Mahoney, 4-H Staff
Ages: 5-8, Maximum 6 Youth
Join us for a hands-on arts and crafts workshop where creativity meets the changing seasons! Participants will decorate paper trees to reflect the unique beauty of our seasons here in Maine. Using simple craft materials, youth will explore seasonal colors and textures while developing fine motor skills and artistic expression. Each youth will complete a four-season paper tree display to take home.

Clothesline Cargo Challenge
Session 4 (10:45 – 12:00 pm)
Presenter: Carla Scocchi, 4-H Staff
Ages: 9-18, Maximum 10 Youth
In the Clothesline Cargo Challenge, you’ll design and build a carrier to safely transport a raw egg along a clothesline. Using provided materials, your mission is to create a stable and protective system that can travel from start to finish without breaking the precious cargo. Get creative, test your design, and see if your egg delivery system is up to the challenge!

Elite Engineers (Filled, Waitlist Only)
Session 2 (10:45 – 12:00 pm)

All Ages, Maximum 10 Youth

Join 4-H staff in a fun building and engineering project. First you will get a chance to test your carpentry skills to assemble a mystery kit using hand tools, and then you will be presented with a challenge that will require your creative brain juices to come up with something unique!

Fairy Lantern Nightlights
Session 4 (2:00 – 2:50 pm)
Presenter: Terry Swazey, 4-H Volunteer
Ages: 9-18, Maximum 6 Youth

Create a mossy habitat within a Mason jar for a fairy. A tea light will add a special glow as a nightlight or as a lantern around the house or garden. The fairy silhouette can be changed to a horse, cat, or dog silhouette.

IMPROV Live! & Groovy Group Games
Session 4 (2:00 – 2:50 pm)
Presenter: Lisa Reilich of Painted Pepper Farm, 4-H Volunteer

Ages 9-18, Maximum 10 Youth
Explore the art of improvisation for the stage in this fast-paced and creative workshop using theatre exercises, group games and short vignettes. No experience needed – just a great attitude and an open mind.

Junior Weather Detectives
Session 1 (9:15 – 10:30 am)
Presenter: Carla Scocchi, 4-H Staff
Ages: 5-11, Maximum 10 youth

Explore the amazing world of weather! We’ll learn how to make basic weather observations, investigate cloud formations, and solve the mystery of what makes weather different from climate.

Learn to Be an Oyster Farmer
Session 1 (9:15 – 10:30 am)
Presenter: Tess Hureau, 4-H Staff
Ages: 9-18, Maximum 10 youth

Welcome to the oyster farm! In this workshop, youth will learn what it takes to run an oyster farm by completing tasks like building an oyster cage, sorting oysters, and creating a sales pitch to entice your customers to buy your outstanding oysters!

Sign Designs
Session 1 (9:15 – 10:30 am)
Presenter: Dawn Roberto, 4-H Volunteer

Ages 5-18, Maximum 12 Youth
In this workshop, youth will transform an ordinary 4″x24″ or 4″x12″ piece of wood into a fabulous piece of home decor ready to hang on your wall in three easy steps. 1) Pick your paint color, 2) Pick your vinyl saying (25 or so to choose from) 3) Learn how to assemble.

Wooly Wonders
Session 2 (10:45 – 12:00), Session 3 (1:00 – 1:50 pm)
Presenter: Jessy Brainerd, 4-H Club Staff
Session 2 Ages: 9 – 18, Maximum 15 Youth
Session 3 Ages: 5-8, Maximum 10 Youth – Parents must be present

This workshop will have you diving into the world of needle felting! In this hands-on session, you’ll learn how to transform soft, colorful wool into amazing creations using a special felting needle. Everyone will be provided with all the materials and supplies needed, and each participant will work on their own unique projects. With the help of a parent, we’ll explore “painting with wool,” creating beautiful flat designs by layering wool in unique ways.

4-H Band Camp
Session 2 (10:45 – 12:00 pm)

Learn to use household materials and other discarded items to craft your own DIY insturments. Share your musical talents and join the jam session!

4-H Touch Tank

The University of Maine Touch Tank Program is a fun, hands-on way for kids to explore Maine’s amazing ocean life! This traveling touch tank brings real sea creatures right to your community, giving you a chance to see, touch, and learn about the animals that call Maine’s coast home. Through exciting activities, you’ll discover how these creatures live, why they’re important, and how we can help take care of our oceans for the future!
