Parthenice Tiger Moth

The Parthenice Tiger Moth (Apantesis parthenice, formerly Grammia parthenice) is a type of tiger moth in the family Erebidae, stemming from the Greek word, Erebus, which means “from the darkness.”  The moths are common in field habitats and forest edges throughout southeastern Canada and the eastern United States.  There are two separate moth flights during May to October.  Like most moths, it is nocturnal and is attracted to light sources.  The caterpillars feed mostly on plants in the Asteraceae family, particularly dandelion, ironweed, and various thistles.
